    The Importance of Comedy of Manners

    This film has always held a special place in the pantheon of english cinema, and in my head.The film and its director Anthony Asquith are of a supremely elegant quality. His vivid colorful depiction of Oscar Wilde's tale coupled with the stunning performances of his stars; Dame May Whitty and Michael Redgrave stand out, make this an enduring work of specially crafted wit and the well-timed snubbing of noses. The print of the film by Criterion is excellent as usual and compliments the films theatrical feel. Watching Wilde's tale play out in such bright color, the costumes, scenery, songs, the switching of identities and characters is like indulging in an intellectual guilty pleasure, like watching the play when it first debuted in theatres in England while Wilde was on trial for ...

    The Importance of Being Earnest

    This version of the play is really a tribute to Dame Edith Evans and her portrayal of Lady Bracknell. If you want to view the complete play, done in the manner it was intended, then acquire the BBC Oscar Wilde Collection and watch the 1987 version. Frankly I prefer Joan Plowright's version of Lady Bracknell to that of Edith Evans, though my opinion may be considered, by many, to be heretical. I was frankly shocked to have found many of what I considered to be the best lines to have been expurgated from Anthony Asquith's 1952 version. Yet it is colorful, and Edith Evans and Margaret Rutherford, as Lady Bracknell and Miss Prism, respectively, are entertaining enough.
