I bought the CD thinking it was just the "unplugged" version; I get tired of hearing the same stuff everyone hears on the radio over and over and over. I was surprised when the original CD was in the case as well since I hadn't had a chance to hear that one before either. MORE surprising is how much feeling this guy put into EVERY song on both CDs, not to mention that he really is a good singer. I thought this would be an interesting 180 from what I usually listen to (Neo Soul), but DeGraw put so much soul into this music that it's verrrrry lovable! OK, it's over 2 years after the release ... I know I'm slow. But I LOVE IT now. That just shows that it's timeless.
I had heard the song "Chariot" and loved it, so I figured it would be best to get the cd. I also figured it would turn out to be one of those cd's that you buy and only like one or two songs on them. WRONG! The whole cd is awesome! DeGraw writes most if not all of the songs on the cd, and his voice is unbelievable. There is so much range of emotion in these songs-- and he is a moving vocalist! This is the best cd I have purchased in the past year!!!!
I thought this was a really great CD. I knew some of the songs before I bought the CD, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear some that I hadn't heard on the radio and I really liked. Sometimes you get a CD and the only good songs on it are the ones that are played to death on the radio. This was not the case. I also enjoy the unplugged disc that gives the same songs a different vibe. This is definitely worth buying. I plan to listen to it over and over.
Gavin has a rare soulful, hip and funky kind of sound. I also love the fact that this album has two discs because my favorite is the stripped version. There is something calming about the studio, house of blues type feel. Highly reccomend.
With the release of Gavin DeGraw's self-titled sophomore album, many fans were left disappointed about the shift in his style from a raw, stripped performer to an over-processed (though I hate to say it) sell-out. But long before this album, Gavin's fan base had already gone global thanks his debut album, Chariot. The eleven, carefully compiled melodies are powerful and soulful and emotional all at once. They can easily flow endlessly on repeat when given the chance and there isn't a single moment of musical stagnation to punctuate the lyrical ride that Gavin sweeps you away on even if you've heard all of these tracks before (and if you haven't, BUY THIS ALBUM!!) Don't hesitate to own this classic if you've been thinking about it. Don't forget, this includes the stripped version of the song which elevates the songs to a higher level you never though possible when something has already achieved perfection to begin with.Read full review
