Still has a place in the tablet market!
Pros: Fast boot, clear screen, windows 8.1, simple to use, comes with MS office 2013. Cons: Locked to windows only products, no other browser can be used. Great piece of equipment for general browsing and office packages but limited in functionality, a great starter tablet for school / college work.

Don't. Bother. Unless you like Windows 8
Lovely looking machine and rather nippy. But as it is Windows 8 rt you can't upgrade to Windows 10 and unable to downgrade either. Only able to use programs from the Microsoft store, not able to download externally either I. E Google chrome or anything else. Don't waste your money spend a little extra and buy a better device

A fantastic tablet... Wait, the first proper tablet.
At first I was a little bit apprehensive towards the surface RT, mostly due to the fact that it wasn't the full Windows and software that I was used to run on my system weren't compatible and with a marketplace that looked rather poor it looked really limited.... And on top of that reviews were not so great. But then I tried it in my local PC World and I was pleasantly surprised by the build construction, the quality of the screen and the ease of use. Therefore I decided on trying my luck on ebay as I wasn't overly impressed by the price Microsoft set for it.... I have now been using my Surface for nearly a couple of months and I'm convinced this is the best piece of equipment ever made. It's not perfect... Nothing is, but it's the best portable ... At first I was a little bit apprehensive towards the surface RT, mostly due to the fact that it wasn't the full Windows and software that I was used to run on my system weren't compatible and with a marketplace that looked rather poor it looked really limited.... And on top of that reviews were not so great. But then I tried it in my local PC World and I was pleasantly surprised by the build construction, the quality of the screen and the ease of use. Therefore I decided on trying my luck on ebay as I wasn't overly impressed by the price Microsoft set for it.... The fact that Office 2013 is offered with the tablet makes it great as it is still the Office suite standards and your tablet is not just to consume but to also create content. The stand is a great design move, and I found that combined with the touch cover it sits very comfortably on your belly while checking stuff in bed. Actually the list is long.... So what's bad... Well, as mentioned, the OS is young and the marketplace not so crowded... although is getting better. The lack of compatibility with normal Windows apps make it quite puzzling at the beginning... It's a Windows computer without the riches of Windows... But the essential is here. It's quite heavy, so carrying it with two hands is obligatory (unless you're a weight lifter). it's not your average tablet and it's a great job from Microsoft design department.

Great build and fun to use; shame about the Apps.
I bought one of these second hand through eBay as I wasn't sure what it would be like and £479 incl VAT new was a bit spicy. I've had iPads and iPhones before this, but also use Win 8 and Windows Phone 8, so the Surface RT interface was pretty easy to get to grips with. Build quality of the device is very good, and I particularly like the operation and feel of the kickstand. Mine came with a touch keyboard, and this also works really well - much better than I was expecting. The UI is tile based, the same as WP8 and Win8, but you can also go to a 'standard' MS desktop too if you like, which operates in a similar way to Win7. The Surface comes with some Apps pre-installed, the most useful of which I've found to be Office RT, which is great when you're out and ... As others have already mentioned, one of the biggest issues with the Surface RT is the lack of Apps - there are plenty of fairly poor ones out there, but decent ones are still thin on the ground - Twitter have only now just released an App, and there isn't a Facebook one yet for example (the 3rd party ones aren't that great IMO). There is the integrated MS People App, but for me that doesn't quite do it. The device is also lacking in the video codecs that it can handle, mp4 being the one it recognises - mkv doesn't work at all. I get round this by watching videos via Plex, however a VLC App would be good. Another issue thats recently hit the Surface is that Google Mail and Calendar doesn't work as seamlessly as it used to (due to Google changing things). There are some workarounds, but this isn't ideal, and is a real hassle as I don't want to transfer all my stuff over to Hotmail. Hopefully this is something that gets sorted soon. So in summary, why did I buy it - I fancied a change and liked the look of the Surface. I've had iPads in the past and also have a Kindle Fire HD. I find I use both the Surface & Kindle regularly and for different things. In comparison to an iPad, the Surface has great potential, however MS are going to have to get behind developers to improve the number of quality and useful Apps, and sort out some of the basic glitches such as calendar syncing etc. I have read that MS are going to support this device for at least another 18 months, which is good news if they continue to produce Surface type devices, and don;t allow this one to become obsolete in 18 months.
