I have seen many of Alexandro Jodorowsky's films, and I think he is one of the most under-rated filmmakers of our time. Alexandro Jodorowsky is not a prolific filmmaker. He has only made a handful of films. Most of these films tackle themes of Religion in a very irreverant manner. This dvd has been a long time coming. It was long unavailable because of some dispute between the creator and producer over legal rights. This film is the ultimate exploration on the futility of a so-called spiritual journey. It is also an indictment on Western Religions, especially Christianity. Jodorowsky's imagery, as usual, is breathtaking in its iconoclastic power. There is one scene of a reenactment of the “Conquest of Mexico” performed with frogs and lizards that is quite disturbing, but also very poignant. The Holy Mountain concerns one man's search for spirituality and his eventual discovery of the congame that all religions eventually become. I will not give away the ending, but I had some problems with it. Jodorowsky's art is extreme. He tends to present his ideas on the nature of religion through the lens of not just a skeptic, but also a cynic. He does, though, seem to believe in the power of the Human Spirit to overcome these obstacles. The methods used to convey the disillusion of the Seeker and the dissolution of the Quest goes over the line. Not in terms of images that disgust, but in terms of "Aesthetic License". The whole of the film is quite convincing and compelling, up until its ending. Why Jodorowsky chose to end his film the way he did I can only guess. Suffice it to say that I had not known the meaning of the phrase "Aesthetic Deadend” until I finished watching The Holy Mountain.Read full review
Ok, first I must say that this is one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen. It starts weird stays weird and ends weird. But it also contains some of the most impressive visual imagery I have ever seen. If you manage to sit through the whole movie you may understand it and then again you may not. I have watched "The Holy Mountain" several times and I still don't understand it all. But! I still highly recommend watching this movie. Just don't forget that I warned you.
This movie has some disturbing images that may offend some people. I found it to be very interesting, though I didn't really care for the ending. It contains alot of Cabalistic symbology, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. If viewed with an open mind, then you may understand it.
From an acclaimed and contreversial film maker, Alejandro Jodrowsky, comes a film that claims to "re-invent the genre of film".Ofcourse this naturally caused skeptisism both during the time of release and with any person who picks a copy of this film up in the local shop or on eBay, it did so to me who after a reccomendation sought out this film from the aformentioned auction site. I placed it in my dvd player in a whimsical frame of mind thinking that it could either be another example of psychedlic overtly drug endused baffoonery witnessed in films like "L.S.D" starring peter fonda or a slightly more adult version of the "Labyrinth" but without David Bowie. But this was not the case. The blurb on the rear of the case proclaimed marilyn manson and david bowie fans of this film and i can immediately see why. The film revolves around a character closely resmebling jesus who is put through any number of trials and tribulations, serving more as a lens on the wonderful world created by alejandro than any sort of personality. The world he shows is a world in which all of the characters of modern society can be attributed to, and which reflects the rights and wrongs of human existance as it is. The film sets out to display this using an incredibly large cast and some of the most beautiful and disturbing imagery seen in film. The audience are confornted with explosive sets which feature extravagant costumes and some truly confusing sights, and it takes a while to fully take in the vast expanse of jodrowsky's world, but the sooner you begin to comprehend his motives the sooner he turns them on their head. This film will enthrall and confuse you, and will tkae you on a journey that no other film as ever done some may wish to return home, but those who climb the holy mountain will be very much at home on its summit.Read full review
