Necessary
I recommend it only as a replacement. The unit is of fair to good quality as evidenced by the fact that the original lasted roughly 50 years before cratering. As to it's value, again I would say "fair to good". I have had extensive experience with this company's breakers and the fact that they are no longer manufactured by this company speaks for itself. Aftermarket breakers that fit the original panelboards are an improvement but have some of the same disadvantages; poor line contact that gets worse with age and too small an enclosure resulting in less heat dissipation further exacerbating the aging process. As to the quality of this particular breaker i will say it exceeds the quality of the smaller single pole Stab-Loc breakers the company used to sell.
