This is an excellent Gothic mystery. Similar films directed by Alfred Hitchcock are considered classics, but in my opinion Fritz Lang's SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR is just as good. The main character, Celia, is a wealthy heiress who marries a man she has known for only two weeks. When she moves into his home, she finds he has kept some major secrets from her. He has been married before, and he has a teenage son who believes Daddy killed Mom. Daddy also has a macabre collection of rooms in which women were murdered. He has purchased the actual furnishings from the crime scenes and re-assembled them in his home. Celia comes to believe her husband wants to murder her. Should she leave, or should she try to cure his apparent mental disturbance? The answer may seem obvious, but as played by Joan Bennett, Celia is a courageous woman who loves her husband, and her actions make sense in the context of the film. Even though there is no gore, there are some truly scary moments. Surrealism, Freudian psychology, and unexpected plot twists kept me riveted. I highly recommend this little-known gem.

This was an interesting mystery movie, which kept the viewer's interest until the end. It was more entertaining than diabolical. I enjoyed seeing Michael Redgrave performing in a more sinister manner.
