Amazing Samurai Action Film
"13 Assassins" is an amazing call back to a bygone age ! If the "Last Samurai" was a glorification of the Samurai code of bushido, this movie was the polar opposite. The violence level was extreme, even disturbing, but if you are looking for a portrait of feudal Japan with grit and realism you are sure to find it here. The story-line is done like the exploitation films of American cinema in the 70s. A high ranking warlord who is more spoiled brat than man runs rough-shod over the peasants of his region. Raping pillaging, and killing this blood-thirsty youth makes many enemies. A local regent hires a faithful Bushi to assemble a group of killers to bring the abusive young Lord's reign of terror to an end. This tale has all the adventure action of movies like "Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo" but without the mythology of the "super-hero." The 13 assassins are genuine, howbeit flawed characters. Set in the peaceful years just before the Meiji restoration, these Samurai were warriors without a war, until their big break came along to fight, and perhaps die for an honorable cause. This is a must see for exploitation film fans and lovers of Japanese history and cinema.
