The case where smaller is better
I purchased both the 10x40 and the 7x42 models. I think the 7x42 model is far superior in design with these he integral lens caps and the compass feature in the view. It also has a strap feature that is adjustable to your hand size, which makes it easy to carry around and have ready to look at bird or dolphin at an instant. Both are good quality optics, one is just more useful to my mobility lifestyle.I purchased both the 10x40 and the 7x42 models. Positives ; Has (2) lens covers, Large Object lens, Focus is smooth and stable (stays put) & has a focus "ring" - not a knob making it slimmer & more pocket friendly. W/F proof is a +. Negatives ; Seems a bit dark for having a 40mm Objective lens ( though i have yet to try it in low light). Depth of Field is very shallow, making it fussy to get the sharpest focus. In General ; It will serve "my" purpose.I did Not buy this as a regular carry optic. I was sold on the larger object lens & spent the xtra for the W/F proof though this was probably not necessary. Hind Sight ; for "my" use, would have done just as well and saved $$ by buying the even more pocket friendly Tasco Monocular. Tasco has a "cheap" reputation, but i'm of the opinion that Tasco makes the Best optics in ... Nice & seems very durable
A little less clarity of image than ideal. But hey, it's not a $400 optic! Bought this for squirrel hunting to verify possible targets without swinging the gun around. Works very well. I recommend adding a neck strap for quick access. It doesn't come with one.

Thought it would be better.
The unit I'd quiet big and robust for this magnification size. The lense cap on the eye piece is cheap but good on the opposite end. I have very good vision but looking through this I can not read letters or numbers on a number plate at a distance of roughly 300m in broad daylight after trying to focus the lense. Also I didn't realize that it was "Made in China". I could have bought similar for allot less direct from China.The unit I'd quiet big and robust for this magnification size.
