This book by E. Annie Proulx is probably not for everyone. I say that because I have recommended it to a number of people who were unable to get into it. That said, there is a lot going on in both the story and plot lines. While the story deals with the need to come to grips with the past, in order to be fully in the present, it is SO much more. Proulx absolutely earned the Pulitzer and National Book Awards she received for penning The Shipping News. I have read it at least a half dozen times over the years, and each time, I learn something new. Why do I call this my Elevator Test book? Because, my friend, if you have read The Shipping News and really loved it, I wouldn't mind being stuck in an elevator with you for a few hours.

I am a devoted reader. I would give 5 stars to perhaps 5 or 6 books in my life. This one gets 5. The imagery and character development are so deep and rich. The story is unusual and compelling. I can't say enough about how wonderful it is.
