Aereo-Plain - John Hartford, Norman Blake, Tut Taylor, Vassar Clements 16 Tracks - minutes This is my all-time favorite album. It was the one I didn't mind my Dad playing when I was young. You can tell that they were having a great time recording this release. The story is that after John wrote the big hit "Gentle On My Mind", his label gave him a ton of money to record a follow up hit. Well he bought a large amount of weed and went into the studio for months and came out with this recording. The record label was horrified and shelved it. It did find eventual release and be came an underground folkie hit. This recording is kind of hard to peg. I wouldn't call it blue-grass or folk, country or rock. Just goodle Americana. Fiddles and mandolins. 1. Turn Your Radio On 2. Steamboat Whistle Blues 3. Back in the Goodle Days 4. Up on the Hill Where They Do the Boogie * 5. Boogie * 6. First Girl I Loved 7. This is the most historically important album in the past 40 years, bluegrassicologically speaking. "Back in the Goddle Days" and "Steam Powered Aereo Plane" have become classics. It introduced all the people who knew John Hartford as the guy from The Smothers Brothers TV show, who wrote "Gentle on My Mind," to such giants as Vassar Clements, Randy Scruggs, Tut Taylor and Norman Blake. It introduced the boomers to bluegrass. Produced by a young up and comer named David Bromberg it reflects the era when corporations didn't control art, and while cuts like "Boogie" and "Station Break" would never "make the cut" now, it reflected John's sense of the artistic, it truely stands or falls, a unified artistic work, as an album, not a bunch of songs laced together. This is the work that built the bridge between the generation of the Bill Monroe's and the generation of the Sam Bush and David Grisman's. If you were there, or wish you were there, one thing is certainly evident. You need to own this album, no ifs, ands, or buts about it!Read full review
