Nice printer - but only uses OEM cartridges
This is the second Lexmark Pro901 we have. We bought this one for compatibility and use in our motorhome - mainly as a wireless printer through our router. Nice printer. Easy set-up. Can easily add and change special printer applications from Lexmark web-site. Wireless set-up was surprisingly easy. Wireless printing speed is very good. WHY 4 STARS INSTEAD OF 5? Be aware! Unfortunately, Pro901 printers built after October 2010 will not allow the use of non-OEM printer cartridges so you either refill or use Lexmark cartridges. Our first printer was built before 10/2010 and worked with non-OEM cartridges - UNTIL we installed an update to the firmware which included the non-OEM cartridge recognition and prohibition - sneaky. Also, both printers we bought had problems with the printhead. ... This is the second Lexmark Pro901 we have. I admit, this isn't the BEST printer out there but good enough for me to have purchased 3 of them for three of my housing. You probably won't find a printer that will save you money in the long run, especially when it comes to paying for ink refills. In terms of printing quality, it does its job, no doubt but if you want clear and vivid image for lecture notes for CT scans of MRIs, go for a laser printer, but again, this computer does its job above average I think. It has issues with connecting wirelessly or communicating with your labtop once in a while but can be solved by turning either the printer or the computer on and off. This Is A Fantastic Printer
I've never owned a printer before because I didn't really know what features I needed to consider. Prices varied considerably but I had no trusted source to help me make a decision (don't believe the sales people at the big box office supply stores - they all seemed to have a biased agenda steering you to the high end printers, especially the HP's). However after reading a recent review of printers in Consumer Reports I learned the two things that were most important to me were the cost of the replacement ink cartridges and having a wireless printer for my laptop that was easy to set up. The Lexmark Pennacle Pro901 was not only very highly rated but it also had the lowest cost of ink per page - $5.00 for a replacement cartridge (the 105XL black ink cartridge which I ... I've never owned a printer before because I didn't really know what features I needed to consider. An added plus is that the individual color cartridges are available seperately but you can select to print in black only and switch it back to color when the need arises. I'm not much of a techno geek but I found the set up and syncing the wireless connection to my laptop fairly easy. Other great features for me are it's large LCD programming touch screen and it's nice clean shape and design. The only possible negative feature is that it does so many things that the users manual is kinda big so it takes a little effort to figure out how to understand and change the settings from the ones I normally leave it set on. I mostly just use it to print one or two black and white pages at a time of something I want to save from my computer screen. But since it is an "All-In-One" printer it also can serve as a copier (which works very well), a scanner (haven't tried that), a fax machine (have never hooked it up to a phone line), and it is supposed to be a very good photo printer (haven't used that feature either but Consumer Reports claims it is "Excellent"). Finally the ink cartridges that came with the printer had some red lever-like cap/seals that need to be removed before you install the cartridges; however these caps were of a lot different configuration then the ones pictured in the setup instructions. I spent a lot of time trying to install the ink cartridges with the caps still in place until I finally realized what the problem was. Since the instructions said that you needed to press them in firmly, I think I might have been lucky I didn't break anything while trying to force the cartridges into place while the red lever type caps were still attached.

When I first got it it was not working because it needed an upgrade of software. When I call the Technical Support it was great, they told me what to do and from that day has been working very well. My only complaint is the scans use a lot of memory. When I take the same document and fax it to my electronic email inbox, the storage that it uses is 5 or 6 times less than the same document if scanned. Other than this issue the printer is very reliable, the support is excellent and it has a 5 year warranty.
