A local tragedy framed by a valuable economic history of farming.
I am a native of Johnson County, Iowa and remember when the events of this book transpired, and how county residents were rocked by these deaths. This book tells the story in a factual way, without bias toward either the bankers or the farmers, which is the right way to tell the story of a place where bankers and farmers are dependent on each other for their livelihood. The book is very well researched and the greater story lies in the economic history of farming that Brown provides, a complicated history, but one with regular cycles of depression and one affected by government interference. Every modern farmer needs to have an understanding of the history of the farm economy in this country in order to safeguard their land and livelihood. Those who aren't familiar with the rural life tend to picture it in odd frames, because they don't know what they're looking at. Hats off to Brown for getting it right.
