Gameplay and graphics are improved over 2k7 and now that this game is so cheap its a great deal. I have alot of fun playing this game alone or with friends. The character models looks much more lifelike than in 2k7 but some player still look weird. The control is simple enough for new players or deep enough if you want to learn more advanced moves. They got rid of the "story mode" called 24/7 and its fine with me. They added in blacktop mode that is a series of events like slam dunk contest (it takes some practice to learn), 3pt shoot out, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 street ball type games ect. another great thing is that under My NBA option you can adjust the sliders in the game to make it play the way you want it too. This is not as good as NBA 2k10, just out as of this review, but its not $60 either. anyone looking for a solid and fun NBA game but wanting too save some $$$ NBA 2k8 is the answer.Read full review
Somehow 2k8 seemed o improve from its last installment 2k7. Graphics are more crisp and smooth, the crown is louder than ever, and so realistic. I have both NBA live 08 and NBA 2k8. By far NBA 2k8 is better. It has all new mechanics so where every player reflects every move of its realife counter part. That Kobe Bryant fade away, they got it, that Lebron dunk they got it. From the no shows to the playmakers they all use the same movement as the players in the NBA. One of the great things about this game is that you feel like you are actually watching a real basketball game, the announcers are great, they are the real ones from the TV broadcasts. The breaks are great, the replays are also pretty good, and the halftime show and post game states are pretty neat. The graphics arnt the best in the world but they still look real. The gameplay is smooth, no jumps or freezes. The new A.I. makes it so where there are no 100 to 60 point games, the defense plays physical and hard. Another great thing is the dunk contes, being able to jump over cars is cool, the three point shootout and more add more things to the game. Getting tired of playing regular games, play a game of 21 on the blacktop. I recommend you get this game soon, before you get liveRead full review
NBA LIVE 08 has great graphics and is actually a fun game to play. Unfortunatelty, thats about it. Yes it's improved dramatically this year; LIVE 08 is smooth, glitches have been fixed, and game play is less arcade and more simulated. HOWEVER, NBA 2K8 is as realistc as you can get to the real thing. if you want to play real basketball, go with NBA 2K8. but if you want something for the kids, get LIVE 08. I WILL PROBABLY BUY BOTH. LIVE 08 to play with my NEPHEWS; NBA 2K8 to play with MY CREW !!! ONLINE. ONLINE GAME PLAY FOR ALL SPORTS GAMES, 2K SPORTS IS THE KING!!! TRUTH.
The simulation of the player characteristics and signature moves are better than NBA Live 08. However I noticed a glitch in dunk contest, the shorts of players sometimes disappear.? As for pros and cons, I like the dunk contest in Live 08 better as it is more realistic with the judges and score card. Even though I like you can use props on 2k8. Graphics are slighty better on 2k8. I noticed that playing against the cpu is more difficult in 2k8 and sometimes unrealistic how the cpu being down many points towards the end can make many miracle plays and win even on pro level which is one up from pro level. Overrall a great game if you dont pay over $30 for it.
Let me start by saying that I like sports games and I've played every 2k game made. When I first bought the game, I played it on the default settings and found it to be way too easy. I was winning games by 30+ points. So I decided to try the harder difficulties and after a while I started playing on "Hall of Fame", which is the hardest the game offers. Firstly, let me start with what is wrong with this game and why these things make this game unrealistic and no fun: 1. It doesn't really matter what team you're playing. Depending on how lucky you get, they'll all score between 90-100 points a game. I played about 30 games in a season and the low opponent score was 85 and the high was 104. Not a large range. 2. This next reason is the most unrealistic and frustrating aspect of this game, and no matter what I did to tweak the settings, it could not be fixed. When you are on defense, you can pick between various zone defenses (either to shut down the paint or shut down the perimeter). No matter which defensive set you choose, the CPU point guard will end up getting 20+ assists a game. Why? Because 99% of the time down the court if you play a Man or 2-3 Zone defense, which is supposed to shut down the paint, the CPU will run the EXACT SAME PLAY EVERY TIME. The guard calls for a baseline pick and the power forward will run along the baseline while the point guard throws him a pass through 3 defenders and he'll dunk it every time. NO MATTER WHICH TEAM I PLAYED, THEY ALL DID THIS. EVERY GAME THE CPU HAD ABOUT 70 POINTS IN THE PAINT. YES, 70. 70 OUT OF THEIR 95. Even if you switch the zone defense up or try controlling different defenders, the point guard will pull this pass off every time unless you leave a perimeter guy open, in which case he'll probably knock down a 3. This reason, and this reason alone caused me to stop playing the game. Even when I manually tweaked the settings so that my "Defensive Awareness" and "Clog Passing Lanes" were 100%, he still pulled this off every time. Even point guards with ratings in the 70's were racking up 20+ assists a game. I like my sports game to be realistic, and this just kills it. 3. Now, if you can somehow figure out how to combat this, which I cant, there's another big problem. If you run a pick and roll with a center, you can get him open in the paint for a pretty open dunk. However, instead of dunking it, he'll do a 2-foot jump shot or a 1-handed teardrop. Only about 10% of the time will he actually dunk the ball. They also tend to miss these shots or have them blocked quite frequently. 4. The announcers. Every NBA game has a problem with the announcers saying the wrong things at the wrong times. They will frequently comment on how your team is shooting poorly from the free throw line, even if you're at 75+%. If you're at 100%, every time you make a free throw they'll comment with something like, "Well, they're not the best free throw shooting team in the league, but they sure are acting like it today." (Even though in my season, my team was the best free throw shooting team at 88%) Which brings me to another point... 5. Free throws are too easy. You can make them more difficult by adjusting the "Free throw difficulty" setting, but even at 100% I still consistently make 85-90% as a team. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! There are tons of other things wrong with the game, but I've run out of room. Take my word for it.Read full review
I have been a nba 2k fan since the series began and i like the direction the franchise is going in but i think a lot of animations could be improved and the presentation could be ALOT better for nba 2k8 the menu's are bland and the beginning screen where it automatically directs you to the cavs vs. spurs screen is pretty annoying. The new dunk and 3pt contests add a nice touch but the 3 point shootout is very hard in my opinion and the dunks look a little awkward sometimes. Overall i love the game i just think there are a handful improvements that can be made in next years nba 2k9.
This game is amazing. The graphics are great. It seems to me that some teams have more detail than others. It seems the Mavs look more like themselves than any other team. I'm not sure if 2k sports has a lot of Mavs fans or what. But all teams and players look good. I was pretty disappointed with how the coaches look. Only Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan look a little like themselves. Being a Spurs fan myself the first thing I said when they showed the Spurs coach was say "That's not POP!" But that's forgivable because who cares what the coaches look like. The game play is so much better than NBA Live 08's. The only advantage I could see that Live has is the use of the right stick. Live uses it to control the ball. you can rock it back and forth and the player keeps crossing the ball over. With 2k8 the right stick can be flicked to shoot and has other options that take a bit to get used to if you haven't played it, or previous years versions before. I rented both games before deciding to buy 2k8. To me it was hands down the best game. The looks of the two are similar, but the game play of 2k8 was far superior. If you want the best basketball game you can buy for 360 right now: this is the game for you.Read full review
Me and my dad is always a fan of NBA video games and ever since NBA 2K_ started the revolution on hoops video gaming we become an instant follower and forget E_ sports to my shelves. Now we have all of their NBA 2K series and NBA 2K8 is so far the best of them all. Jaw dropping Graphics is a give away but Did I mention in 2K8 the players move, shoot and dunk exactly what they do in NBA court...in reality! Excellent! Well done 2K Sports. We can't wait for NBA 2K9. I hope they bring back Dennis "the Worm" Rodman to life and the players can customise his hair colour in every game...that's FANTASTIC!!! How about a Veteran NBA 2K version, that would be cool. Relive Michael Jordan's amazing aerial show again.
I've been playing 2k9 for some time now but I decided to try 2k8 again. (on xBox). After getting used to 2k9, 2k8 seems to lack a few thing, but overall court graphics and gameplay are still the best ever with 2k8. 2k9 fell far behind with court graphics and gameplay with player running completely out of control. Can wait for 2k10. Im not buying tho. Im renting and then buying used because this year I fealt like I was cheated out of my money, So I won't give them a chance to get it back.
I own both NBA Live 09 and 2k9. originally I purchased 2k9 and disliked it so I sold it and bought Live. I believe Live's update feature's are better and the games playability is a little better but 2k9 is much better of a simulation of the real thing. 2k9 also affords the ability to play the playoffs which I did not realize live does not. Live does not even have a playoff option. If you want simulation play with playoff option, go with 2k9. If you want arcade type play with better updating, go with live.
