  • Definitely a mixed bag

    When Stanley Dance undertook in early 1958 to fulfill a commission from British label Felsted to record a series of albums by swing-era veterans (he called their music "mainstream jazz" to distinguish it from the New Orleans Trad Jazz fad that had recently swept Britain and more current post-bop "modern jazz"), the results were predictably mixed. After all, you can't force greatness in hothouse conditions. Collected here in one rather cheaply packaged box set (all two-color printing and cardboard sleeves), the results range from the sublime (Coleman Hawkins' High and Mighty Hawk) to the mundane (a wretched L side from Earl Hines) to nice moments here and there in between (I really like the casual brilliance of the Billy Strayhorn-Johnny Hodges set).
