CO5120BN Carbon Monoxide Alarm AC Powered with Battery Backup
This regards a model CO5120BN purchased from the item 282655145704 listed as refurbished. The attached pictures are 300 DPI scanner images. The darker tan coloring of the plastic is a function of distance from the scanner surface and not that of aging or dust. Both English and Spanish language user's manuals sent with the alarm are for a SC9120B alarm different from this one and so not particularly useful. The correct user's manual for the CO5120BN model was obtained online as a PDF from brkelectronics. The cable correctly fits into the alarm socket. A very dead (reads zero volts) 9V battery came installed in the alarm, likely the original one based on the dates printed on it (manufactured 2013/04 and expires DEC 2018). A 9 V new Energizer L522BP lithium battery (manufactured 07/17 and ... This regards a model CO5120BN purchased from the item 282655145704 listed as refurbished. A 9 V new Energizer L522BP lithium battery (manufactured 07/17 and expires 12-2027) which reads 9.78 V fits tightly into the alarm. The alarm is dated 2013 AUG 28 and operates correctly with that new battery as indicated in the correct user's manual. The cover can be carefully removed intact using the blade of a tiny screw driver to gently bend the three plastic spades of the base one-by-one until each is freed from the cover. The alarm had a dense layer of fine dust on the brown AA battery sized FIGARO TGS 5042 sensor underside indicating that the alarm had been installed in a ceiling position for a number of years. That TGS 5042 sensor has a group of four tiny pin hole sized openings at each end which could be plugged by dust if one or the other end faced upwards when mounted on a wall. To avoid that, when the alarm is mounted on a wall, the alarm should be placed so that the battery compartment hinge is oriented at the top or bottom. With AC power supplied to the alarm, the battery drain reads at most 0.2 micro-amperes. Without AC power supplied to the alarm, the battery drain reads 0.26 milli-amperes and briefly 0.80 milli-amperes when the LED flashes to indicate AC power has failed. It is my conclusion that this particular alarm has probably used up four years of its ten year useful life. The battery must be installed so that the smaller plus (+) terminal is toward the center of the alarm. The markings (+) and (-) are printed on the battery compartment drawer but are very difficult to read as they remain hidden under the cover when the drawer is opened. It is possible to put the battery in the compartment bottom first and close it so that no electrical connection is made to the battery. If the battery is installed while the AC power to the alarm is on, chirping continues until the test button is held firmly to test the alarm. Initially for the first hour the red LED may flicker off once a minute until the sensor stabilizes, thereafter it remains constantly on. For 72 hours now there have been no problems with the alarm.

Unit was 1/2 way thru it’s life expectancy before I received it
My review is about the individual unit I received not the product in general. The date in the u it was 5 years old and they are only good for 10 years. It was so old the battery was past it’s expiration date and the alarm was chirping low battery when I installed it, prior to realizing how old the unit was. The distributor did take it back it most people would not have checked the date.

Must Have
The unit I purchased was to replace an older unit. I have only 1 con. The unit only lasts about 10 years. I'm not sure if that is normal, but the cost per year for the safety factor is well worth the cost.
