A great model except for no windshield wipers, side mirrors or alternating ditch lights. The new design with the motor in the truck is a leap forward.

Irresponsilble and inaccurate description
This loco is *NOT* DCC ready. The loco comes with a warning that using it with a DCC address of 00 will cause permanent damage and that a decoder must be installed. KATO publishes installation instructions that involve severing traces on the PCB and soldering wires to the very delicate wires leading from the motors. Those instructions are very hard to follow correctly, and in my attempt I managed to destroy both of the motors.This loco is *NOT* DCC ready. Not reliable, expensive to keep in operation, and thus not recommended...
My experiences with the Kato P42DC were bad. The coreless motors don't last long, and are expensive to replace. Each of the two trucks has a motor in it, and, with every Kato P42 I had, none of the trucks matched. The motors constantly fought each other and, eventually, one would fail. And, when one fails, the other one fails shortly after. In a year and a half of average running, I spent about $500 in replacement motorized trucks and/or individual motors, vs less than $100 in parts for Athearn's P40/P42s over a period of 15 years. I had Kato motors dying on the average of once every couple months, which was ridiculous, and once every two months is probably being generous. When I pointed all this out to Kato in a recent letter, I got no reply. Additionally, electrical pickup is an ... My experiences with the Kato P42DC were bad. The blade on the plastic screwdriver is lame, and will twist up after minimal use. If you go with a Kato P42, it can be quite expensive to keep it running, given how quickly the motors fail. And, my operation was purely analog... no DCC.

beware user error
I have had two of these for almost 5 years now, never had a problem with them. I have done no maintenance on them and they keep running just as powerfully as they day they came out of the box. The one thing I would say to pay attention to is the orientation of the trucks upon a reassembly - this could be the cause for the issues in the previous review, consider this a response: the trucks are marked with direction and F/R symbols, for front and rear truck, as well as the arrows pointing outward. If these trucks are reattached the wrong way, the polarity in the truck-mounted motor could get reversed and would cause problems when trying to run. I cannot say for sure if this is the issue. Consider this an alternative review: best pulling locos of my stock, fast, and reliable. I also run ... I have had two of these for almost 5 years now, never had a problem with them. The P42 was a disaster. Motors have very poor electrical pick up and "fight one another" ...very erratic movement. Very disappointed
