Guitar-smashing hooligans get a psychedelic facelift on their third album--and first flirtation with rock opera.
Reviews
Bloody Essential - "...a masterpiece. A glorious celebration of pop as useless commodity and a commercially corrupted art form....it crosses art-school intelligence with pop flash with neither being cheapened or degraded, and is, as such, a stupendous achievement...", 5 stars out of 5 -- "As this package joyously proves, they never made anything more entertaining or endearing.", 4 stars out of 5 -- "'I Can See For Miles' was the powerhouse....'I Can't Reach You' and 'Rael' both strayed beyond the previous template of the accepted notions of pop, rich in motifs that would return more fully-formed on TOMMY.", 4 stars out of 5 -- "Revisiting it now, you can hear a hint of the monolithic rock that would make The Who a stadium act in the '70s, and the knowing humour that would inspire the best of such Britpop disciples as Pulp and Blur.", "The songs themselves were a glorious hodgepodge. There was one brilliantly chiming anthem 'I Can See for Miles,' a South American flavored pop rocker called 'Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand,' and a psychedelic mini-rock opera 'Rael'...", 9 (out of 10) - "...Townshend finally free of shackles....a stream of brittle, spangly pop songs...which are simply otherworldly....Like all truly great albums, SELL OUT isn't overrated. It's simply that you might not be ready for it yet.", 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...SELL OUT is the most successful concept album ever...To hear these 13 tracks is to be transported to the wistful, alternatingly painful and joyous territory that was the Who's...adolescence.", Ranked #113 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "It was a send-up of consumer culture, and the band's first stab at a concept album.", 4 stars out of 5 -- "What truly defines SELL OUT is its deference to the well-rehearsed language of pop. Kinks-like character vignettes and PET SOUNDS-parroting textures are the dominant influences."

Excellent! Delivered this morning, the earliest expected delivery date! A very fair price, promptly dispatched and well packaged. TRACKED delivery and factory-sealed. Exactly as advertised. A very happy experience, based upon which I shan't hesitate in future to order again from this Seller and have no hesitation in recommending West End Records UK to anyone else thinking of buying from them. Postal TRACKING is now a requirement for me. Untracked mail is getting lost/"lost" far too often.

The CD is brand new and still sealed as described. Good price, well packaged and fast delivery. I have purchased CDs from West End Records previously and I have always been very happy with the service provided. Highly recommended seller.

I started to get concerned after reading some of the negative reviews on here but my order arrived exactly as described, brand new and sealed although it took 2 wks to arrive (not seller's fault). Seller was very responsive in providing me tracking update. Also the CD I purchased was drastically cheaper than anywhere else. Thank you!

    The Who. -Sell out.

It surely must be the best humoured Who album they've recorded, which reflects the humour of its age very well. If you enjoy a good laugh, then this is a great album to have at hand.

    Early Who. Not v.good

Bought this as hadn't heard of it before and love The Who, but this disappoints. Tracks that are good can be found on Live at Leeds so don't bother unless you want to own all their releases.๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ˜ฉ

  • One of the best albums I've ever heard

I've always liked The Who but after seeing a live version of Tommy, on TV, earlier this year, I've gone 'Who' crazy and bought every studio and live album, this being the last. I really wish I'd bought this all those years ago when I'd seen it in record shops in the '70's. I'm discovering these great records at the ago of 59! One of the best albums I've ever heard.

  • Great early Who.

Some tracks sound like early "Tommy". Other tunes experimental.
