About this product

Product Information

The Sigma AF 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM APO OS for Nikon cameras is a telephoto lens for professional use (or for the master amateur) and is one the most popular lenses in its class. It was originally launched to replace the Sigma AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX OS and the AF 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6. It’s a superb telephoto lens from for shooting sports events, concerts, and wildlife at a distance or any situation for which you think you might need a long lens. It works on digital, video and film cameras. Sigma lenses are well known in the industry for the optical stabilizers and the Sigma AF 12-400mm boasts a f/4 potential. The optical stabilizers have two modes, one for general purpose photography and the other for panning, which is great for using at sports matches and following live actions. With long lenses like this it is a good idea to use a tripod to aid image stabilization. The 120-400mm Sigma gives sharp images with the most impressive results at the wider range of its focal length. However, once you get the hang of using your Sigma lens, you will manage some incredible distortion free images at most lengths. The body of the 120-140mm Sigma is made of metal with some plastic parts. It is a very sturdy lens to handle and a textured layer of coating helps parts move smoothly. Zoom and manual focusing rings are made from raised rubber which give excellent control and grip. The diaphragm is made up of a nine-aperture blade. The hood is a bayonet that is ribbed on the inside and the hood adds 3.5 inches to the overall length. The lens features a switch that turns off auto-focus and a switch for turning on the lens' optical stabilization mode. You can set the stabilization to both vertical and horizontal, or you can choose only the vertical setting when you only want to pan shots. The Sigma 12-400mm lens moves forward a bit when you zoom in for a bettter shot, adding as much as 2.5 inches to the total lens length at 400mm. It works on a drive which is superfast and virtually silent. You can choose contrast and Live-View auto-focus. The minimum focal distance is 1.5m and the maximum magnification 1:4:2. The Sigma 120-400mm tolerates chromatic aberration extremely well at any distance from the subject. This Sigma lens takes 77mm rear-mounted filters and comes with a circular lens hood and tripod mount. If you are already using a Sigma lens with filters on your Nikon, you should be good to use them here too. The Sigma AF 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM APO OS technically isn’t designed as a macro, but with its maximum magnification of 0.24x and minimum close-focus distance of 150cm (just under five feet), it can do macro photography. It’s one of the sturdiest and a most reliable Sigma zoom lenses to add to your photographic gear thanks to the quality materials and workmanship.

    Sigma 120-400mm f.4-5.6 w/ OS Rules!

Sigma has been putting out after-market lenses in the past 15 to 20 years which meet or beat the OEM lenses for which I have "invested" in, until recently. I have the best of Nikon lenses, to a price point. I admit, I've spent upwards to $1,700 for a Nikon lens, and have photographed with great success with them. But, I'm blown away as to the quality of the Sigma lenses in the EX and ART series. This 120-400mm is no exception. I've taken it out, in unheard of night conditions, and it performed like a champ. It was clear, sharp, had great contrast in low light, and produced. My sample photo is too large to attach, so find the photo on Flickr using photos/lavonnehing/50557016696/in/dateposted-public to see for yourself. Amazing! This is a 5 Photo panorama, composite, shot with ...

  • Outstanding zoom lens

I shoot a lot of surfers. A good zoom is mandatory, and this one is very good. Excellent image quality with my Nikon D5000. The image stabilization is very good. The lens is heavy, but can still be hand held. The stabilization helps with this and the tripod attachment makes for a good hand grip. Very solidly built lens. Buy one. If you don't like it you should be able to easily sell it.

  • Sigma 400 lens.

  • Awesome lens! For Landscape, sports and almost any outdoor photography

I love landscape photography and approaching the object is sometimes hard. Love this lens its sharp, speed is not a problem using a tripod. I also bought the 2x Tele converter and opened a lot of new possibilities. Totally recommend both.
