  • Simple, old tech that works well!!

I bought this to set the governor on the generator engine I just rebuilt as it MUST run at 3600 rpm to supply proper 60 hz AC. It worked great. I used one like it 30 years ago in the mower shop I was a mechanic while I attended engineering school. It's old and simple technology but it works. No batteries, no complexity, nothing to break no batteries to change and the calibration is inherent in the design. The simplest solution is often the best solution.

  • This tachometer allows you to dial in your Briggs & Stratton engine speed to spec.

I learned about these Briggs tachometers on the Gilson Snowblower Facebook group. They have a spring steel that you must pull all the wayout to a stop so it can vibrate; after starting the motor you put the tach on top of the shield or metal shroud. The energy produced by the crankshaft will rotate the spring towards higher numbers on the RPM scale. From there, based on your Engine Type and model number (available from many websites) you can know what your idle RPM should be set to, and adjust the idle air screw accordingly. This tachometer worked as described, and confirmed I had set the proper speed for a Toro lawnmower after a carb rebuild. My Gilson snow blower is in the middle of an engine replacement project (I found a replacement engine on Ebay too!) and I will use this again after I rebuild another carburetor.

  • Small, reasonable price, interesting to use, and useable.

Read the instructions, easy to use but at first seems confusing, needs a little bit more room than the bottom of a soda can to rest on, small engine tight confines sometimes makes it tough. Works good though, and since I wasn't going to buy a $400 vibratory tach, for $28 I was able to check my engine speeds.

I had to take it apart and clean dirt out as it maybe had sat for a long time. Once I did a tiny bit of oil on the wire helps. This is fairly accurate for small engines, within 50-100rpm. Very useful for setting low and high idle. Overall it works well without a battery.

  • Everyone should have one in his toolbox

Neatest product since sliced bread! It is simple and works exactly as it should. It is accurate though not precise. Easy to set RPMs within range and easily shows speed variations while tuning in carburetor settings. Also much more robust than electronic meters.

  • Weird but it works.

This is the weirdest tool I've ever used, but it works. As you rotate the dial on the tool a wire extends which vibrates when it reaches resonance with the motor. You read the rpm on the scale. Made it simple to set the idle on my mower.

  • No value

This unit broke first time I used it after reading the instructions. It just came apart and could not be reassembled. So, if you like wasting your money go ahead and buy it. Not recommended! There is another unit that runs about $50 + which will give better service.

  • Not a precision instrument

While this gadget will work as described it is not a device easily used to adjust rpm on a motor. You have to reset it after each reading. Better off using a digital or laser. Easier to use and more accurate.
