    Great action movie from the 1960’s.

    I had seen this movie in the theater when I was about 6-7 years old. I knew the torture devise known as the ‘Steel Mare’ was not a figment of my imagination, but rather actually happened as part of the plot of this movie.

    good actors, wrong movie

    Here we have Sidney Poitier miscasted as a barbaric dictator of some distant arab kingdom and Richard Widmark his usual wise-cracking character in the role of a Nordic sea captain. What were they thinking? They could have switched roles and it would have been just as ridiculous. Also, the special effects could have been better and they used the same stuff over and over again. The plot conveniently repeats itself also so they can recycle the same scenes. Must have been a low budget movie.

    A very captivating action movie, well worth viewing.

    This has always been a personal favorite. The main characters are given to excellent performances. Rosanna Sciaffino is captivating as the wife of Sidney Poitier. One of my favorites was Oscar Homolka as Viking royalty. The story of the "Golden Bell" is fascinating and perfectly brought to the screen. The battle action screens are very well done, No one can ever forget the "Mare of Steel."

    The Long Ships , it was one of those movies I remembered seeing late night on TV in my youth, so I bought a copy to add to my collection! Made in 1964, but still holds its entertainment value even today.
