About this product

Product Information

Director Katsuhito Ishii pays homage to Yasiujiro Ozu with this psychedelic twist on Ingmar Bergman's FANNY AND ALEXANDER. Revolving around an eccentric family, the film follows mom (an aspiring animator), dad (a hardworking hypno-therapist), their hormonal teenage son, and grandpa (who has ambitions of becoming a rock star). Meanwhile, the baby of the family, Sachiko, tries to escape the hauntings of a 60-foot ghost, and a visit from an uncle just adds to the general craziness.

  • Award-Winning Film

I saw this movie years ago when we had the DVD rental from Netflix and my family loved it; even though it’s a weird movie with a plot that’s difficult to figure out, that was the intention of this film and it was well-executed. Needless to say, since this film won so many awards, it was difficult trying to find it at a good price. When I did I immediately bought it. This movie focuses on one family in particular - the eccentric Haruno clan - and each person’s struggles. The teenage boy, Hajime, has raging hormones and falls in love with a new classmate. The little girl, Sachiko, has an oversized doppelgänger which constantly bothers her. Our favorite character, the grandfather, is the most perceptive and most eccentric character, which often makes for humorous moments in the film. Ken’ichi Matsuyama, known for his performance as L in the Death Note live-action films, makes a cameo appearance as a bully to Hajime. This is just a taste of a film that embraces what is wonderfully weird about humankind. All in all, amazing performances, stunning scenery, lovable characters, and lovely graphics!
