  • A more capricious Emma than before

I was at first not much liking this version of Emma who seemed quite the very spoiled cold & selfish little rich girl, but we have to remember that is exactly who the character Emma is. And when written she was not meant to be much liked. This production was beautifully made. It looked stunning and all the cast seemed fine enough. They tried very hard for this version to be VERY different to the two 1996 versions & also the 2009 miniseries (Romola Garai) which I love the BEST of all versions. I also thought they made the locations grander than they ought to have been but as I say I think they wanted to be different to the others & in doing these RISKS must be made. I thought after seeing some of the cut scenes they should have been kept in because with those scenes the movie would have flowed better & the story better understood by a NEW audience less familiar with EMMA. It was difficult watching this movie without the cut scenes. To me there seemed little to no romantic connections with any of the characters. So, it seemed cold. If it lacked anything it was any warmth of relations between all the key characters. The decision to cut key scenes is made by the director & editing. The problem is this is a 2-hour movie, but I feel the cut scenes were a mistake. I think in this one they tried to be very different to all the others. Sometimes it may be editing or direction, even casting I do not know. But I feel it was what was left out that determined my vote as being less than it ought to have been. This is sad because I feel sure all the actors tried very hard. I give it 4 stars for the cast who are not in control of what is left in & what is cut from the film. In this film I do not feel it flowed as it ought to have and that has more to do with editing or direction I assume. I will have to watch it again to see if I change my mind. But, having the 3 other Emma's I doubt it I think I got it right. The 2 1996 version were shorter in length and managed to convey the right & key story & emotion that lacked in this one.
