Synopsis
A classic of American fiction, memorializing the traditions, manners and dialect of Maine coast natives at the turn of the 20th century. In luminous evocations of their lives, Maine-born Jewett created startlingly real portraits of individual New Englanders, and a warm, humorous, and compassionate vision of New England character., A classic of American fiction, memorializing the traditions, manners and dialect of Maine coast natives at the turn of the 20th century, and presenting a warm, humorous, and compassionate vision of New England character., In scene after memorable scene of Sarah Orne Jewett's fictional masterpiece, The Country of Pointed Firs, the Maine-born author recorded what she felt were the rapidly disappearing traditions, manners, and dialect of Maine coast natives at the turn of the twentieth century. In luminous evocations of their lives -- a happy family reunion, an old seaman's ghostly vision, a disappointed lover's self-imposed exile, and more -- Jewett created startlingly real portraits of individual New Englanders and a warm, humorous, and compassionate vision of the New England character. No less a writer than Willa Cather ranked The Country of the Pointed Firs -- with Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn -- as one of the three American works most likely to achieve permanent recognition. Long overlooked, Sarah Orne Jewett is today widely acknowledged as an American master and The Country of the Pointed Firs as a landmark in the defining of American character and the American experience.

First time purchase from this seller, and I'd buy from them again. Book was nicely packaged to keep it secure during travel. As a lifelong bibliophile, I appreciate sellers who care about the books they send out. Condition was as described, and I believe that the photo in the listing was the same as the book I received: no stock photo used. Item shipped the same day as purchase, and arrived in 6 days, including a Sunday and a holiday.

I was quite surprised with how well packaged my item was! It was sealed tightly in it's own plastic bag on top of the plentiful amount of bubble wrap included. It was at a fair price and the cost of shipping was about right for the item. It was in mint condition just as described. The only setback was the shipping being pushed back due to poor weather but this neither the fault of the seller or the shipping company. Otherwise, everything was great and I'm happy with the product!

I taught high school English for years and recently found this on my own bookshelf and read it. I loved it and sent to a friend. I had never heard of it and do t know how I obtained it on my own shelf, but glad I did and wished I’d read it long ago. It is timeless and beautifully written. I wished I had taught it in my classes before I retired. I loved the rich writing so much I ordered two copies to tuck into my sisters-in-laws’ gift sacks for Christmas. Highly recommend for any book club or any personal reading. Enriching content about learning to love a community.
