I was given this book when I was released from a psychiatric ward of a wonderful hospital. I am a person with manic-depressive illness and also experience anxiety at times. I've used the techniques described in this book to overcome challenges with mental illness such as not wanting to get out of bed, fear of leaving the house, and inability to communicate my feelings. Dr. Burns' cognitive behavior therapy (which is relying on your thinking rather than your emotions to guide your behavior) has helped me very much combined with psychiatrist prescribed medicine. It was easy to read and the pencil and paper exercises are very good. The very small disappoint I have was that it didn't include even more topics on mental illness.
I have the first Feeling Good and thought it would be helpful to have the benefit of the handbook which has all the written exercises. A lot of the information is essentially the same but presented differently. I'd ultimately recommend both together.

The cd refers to a test on certain pages so I don't know if a book was suppose to come with it or not. Hit only 2 starts by mistake, I wanted 4. The cd is interesting as I have only listened to one.

If you suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, fear of intimacy, or other emotional issues this book can help you learn how you may be magnifying existing health and/or phsycological issues. Alone this book might be of some help especialy if you suffer only very mildly from these issues. THIS BOOK DOES NOT REPLACE THERAPY, IT DOES NOT NECCESARILY REPLACE MEDICATION. What it can do is augment the effect of either. Some people eventualy wean themselves off of medication through these theraputic techniques. Consult your doctor before changing medications. This book is most effective when used with a therapist trained in cognitive behavioral therapy. I wish you much luck and remember you are not alone!
It is a thick book with small print. The contents is great for those who need this information.
