I have KRK v8 s4 speakers and they sounded very "mid rangey" and needed something to fill in the bass but not overpower the control room. I was looking at both the 8" and 10" subs (not the 12" as I don't need to hear that much bass). Finally decided on the 8" sub as my control room is not really that large (11'x15'). To say I was surprised at the 8" sub would be one of the biggest understatements ever!!! It exceeded all expectation and then some and honestly it was not as heavy, weight wise, as some other subs - which is great. (I have it set to 90Hz bypass and about two-fifths volume. One thing that I will express some disappointment in was the footswitch which doesn't turn off the bass but mutes the bass altogether only while the foot pedal is depressed. You will hear your main speakers without any bass whatsoever. I was hoping that the footswitch was more of a bypass that allowed bass to the speakers so you could hear the main mix through just the mains. Alas, that is not the case so you will have to rewire to accomplish that feat. Fortunately I have several other speaker that don't go through the sub that I can rely on for that purpose; however, that may not be the case for a lot of users. (Note to KRK: the footswitch should have 3 stages - mute the sub bass, by pass the sub bass, and power the sub bass.) Unless you're doing Hip Hop or Rap where you need tons of bass or have a really large control room, I don't think you will ever need more than the 8" sub - this thing can make my house shake! Highly recommend the KRK 8" sub - it's truly a monster. Read full review
