For the first time on the PlayStation, Madden NFL 99 sports a 3D polygon engine to go along with new motion-captured NFL animations. Multiple wrap tackles, shoulder drags, pump-fakes, sideline grabs and touchdown celebrations are just a few of the moves at your disposal. If this seems daunting, a One-Button Mode is available to make things less complicated for novice users. An Arcade Mode will also help new players get a feel for the game, which does away with the rules to allow for greater action and more devastating hits. The game includes actual NFL players with ratings based on the 1997 season, all the professional teams, as well as team-specific NFL playbooks. Franchise, Season, Practice, Exhibition, Playoffs and Fantasy Draft are the six different game modes in Madden NFL 99, with Franchise Mode making its first appearance. This mode offers a single player the experience of playing and managing a team for multiple seasons, which involves negotiating the salary cap, signing free-agents and even replacing retired players! An EA Sports game would not be complete without detailed statistical tracking, and Madden NFL 99 is no different. Individual statistics, league leaders, team statistics as well as season standings can all be saved to a memory card. If you have a Multi Tap adapter, up to eight players can compete on the same screen with John Madden and Pat Summerall commenting on the action from the booth.

Last year's Madden, however, lagged behind GameDay, resulting in a pretty lackluster game. This year the team at Tiburon has put as much time and effort into the graphics engine as it has into the AI and gameplay. The result is a beautiful football game that is undoubtedly the most gorgeous football game on the PlayStation today. The 3D polygonal players look incredibly detailed and move with smooth realistic motion. New animations, like receivers tracking the ball with their head, really give the players a life of their own. The AI of the computer-controlled players has dramatically improved over last year's Madden. When the ... When the computer is on defense, the way that it covers the play is very natural, and in turn, more realistic. Cornerbacks no longer look like they are simply running preset paths next to your receiver, but instead act as though they are aware of not only the man they are covering but the other receivers as well. This is demonstrated when you perform a pump-fake or a fake handoff, and the defense falls for it. The AI will recognize your patterns fairly quickly, though, and won't let you get away with too much. The sound and music of Madden NFL 99 are nearly flawless. Pat Summerall calls the play-by-play action, and John Madden is at his side offering his usual Maddenisms. The sound effects are all pretty good. Also new this year is the addition of franchise mode. You can take your team through several seasons, participate in the draft, and basically try to manage the entire team. It's a pretty cool mode, especially since you can simulate games and skip ahead to see stats of players and how they're doing. But with Madden 99's beefier stat tracking, the players on the field aren't the only ones who are rated; you are given a performance rating as the team's manager. This lets you know how well you've managed your team. The control feels typical of Madden football games, with one exception; the game has a new gameplay feature called one-button mode. This control setup allows for novice players to simply push one button to execute a wide variety of different moves. You push one button to hike the ball or throw the ball, and depending on a defender's distance, that one button will also execute a stiff-arm, hurdle, juke, or spin move. This one-button setup allows inexperienced players to jump in and begin playing immediately. Advanced players need not worry though; the new one-button feature is just an option, and you can still use all of the buttons to do anything you feel is necessary. In the end, when it comes down to it, Madden 99 is simply the best Madden game to date. While this is the first NFL football game to come out this season, it's safe to say that Madden 99 will be one of the best football games to ship this year.

My Favorite Madden
This is my favorite Madden of them all. Probably because I was a sr in College and my roommates and I played 24 hrs a day. I personally likes to play as the Steelers, in this game, Stewart was a great quarterback (this game was made 1 year after he had his only good year as a quarterback). I know the graphics are much better in the newer Madden games with more playing options.......but this is my favorite for the Madden games made for the first Playstation!This is my favorite Madden of them all. Probably because I was a sr in College and my roommates and I played 24 hrs a day. Well I received this earlier than expected. Was excited and hooked up the system. I tried out my new memory card and was amazed at how I remembered after all this time how to operate the controls.. First off I noticed it's similar to Madden 2000 but the first type of 3d effect graphics for this franchise. I had a blast playing it again and will spend countless hours having fun. The game had no scratches like advertised and was near mint which I was REALLY happy about. Awesome condition. A lot of fun. Graphics are a little rough, but it's an older game. Great value, though! Kids enjoy it to! I bought it with no instructions, which helps a lot, but you can get yours on the internet I'm sure. If you like playing football games, this one still scores a TD in my book.
