About this product

Product Information

The Caldecott Award-winning and New York Times bestselling fable of compassion and kindness retold by acclaimed artist Jerry Pinkney. In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney's wordless adaptation of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he'd planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher's trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.

  • New Caldecott Winner

Jerry Pinkney has always made beautiful illustrations and this book is one of his best by far. It's a picture book of the classic tale of the lion and the mouse. My son's librarian read it to his first grade class and they loved telling what was happening on the page. I bought it so the author could sign it for him when he's here for a book signing this month. We have really enjoyed looking at the pictures and creating our own words to go with the pages.

  • Beautiful picture (only) book!!

The beautiful illustrations in this award-winning book tell the old story of the lion who is done a great favor by a mouse. It is unfortunate that this book was given a bad review simply for not having words because that is the kind of book it is intended to be, and if the person had wanted one of the many versions that have words they should have bought one of those instead. So please ignore the review of that person as it is completely inappropriate. I bought this book to send to our sponsored child in Africa who speaks a different language and is just now barely learning to read. It would do no good to send her a book with English words in it. But I want her to love books and believe this one to be an excellent choice. I'm certain she will love "reading" it.

  • This is a retelling of the old Aesop's fable about the lion and the mouse. It is as heartwarming as ever.

The paintings in this book are magnificent. They are so powerful that they tell the story without the need for words. I mean they literally tell the story without the need for words! This is a great book!
