    Replacement Scanner

I already had a 4490 scanner that was several years old when something in the light bar track system went on the fritz and it wouldn't function. I checked out an authorized repair shop and it looked like the repair would have started at @$95. For that amount, I checked online and was able to pick up this unit for only a little more. It's in better shape than my old one and the interior scanner bed glass is cleaner, giving me a better, more consistent scan. Delivery was sooner than expected, everything was there in the box and in good shape. I already had power and connectors in place, so I just had to hook it up and try it out. It performs well and I'm happy with the purchase. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that i don't have a broad experience with multiple scanners, so I ...

  • Okay, But . . . . .

Color is good and images are plenty sharp. Scanning time is relatively fast. But, when I need it to scan 120MM negatives, it's worthless. It insists on chopping each image scanned into 2 parts. I'm speaking of the resulting image, not the actual negative. I stopped wasting time trying to get to function properly and went out and bought a slide and film scanner that will handle 120 size film.

  • It works for film and should last longer than the better scanning kodak.

The one I bought on ebay was damaged so I went to Amazon. This scanner is passable, but not great. I was using this for scanning 35mm film negative to electronic files. It does automatically convert the negative to positive, but the clarity is only so so. I had a Kodak 35mm scanner that took much better quality scans, but couldn't feed well and developed a hot pixel streak. This prompted me to purchase the 4490. The Epson is also slow. It takes about 20 seconds per frame and with rolls and rolls of film my project will take a while. I am planning on using this to scan my old film and find if there are any that I want professionally scanned. Film loading is easy, but I question if the flimsy plastic frames actually control the film well enough. This scanner will perform well enough to view ...

  • Not for Ancient or Odd sized Negatives Epson does not provide the Holders

The scanner works fine. The instructions for us who are older and not technical gurus is lacking. What happened to the good old 1, 2 3 instructions. Where is there a "definition" of technical terms located? There are not enough of the proper negative holders in the correct sizes to scan the older negatives from the 1930's, 1940's or 1950's. Epson has catered to the 1960's + film and slides. We need holders for 620, 126 and Box camera film. Also, the 3 x 5 inch negatives and all those ancient sizes. With the baby boomers living longer, Epson is missing a large market of buyers. When you buy a product to do a specific job, the information included with the negative sizes should be right on the box or in large print to assist the consumer making the correct decision about the job that ...

  • My Epson Scanner

I really like this scanner. This is the second Epson 4490 scanner I have purchased. I wore the first one out. It lasted 8 years of high volume usage from me. For the money, it is well worth it. The next level from this scanner will be quite expensive. I am very happy with this one. Paul Ford
