About this product

Product Information

"Deadwood - The Complete First Season" is a 6-disc set of the television western series. This DVD set has a run time of 720 minutes. The main stars of this series include Molly Parker, Keith Carradine, Brad Dourif, Robin Weingart, and Ian McShane. It is produced by David Milch. "Deadwood - The Complete First Season" has 12 episodes. The setting is a lawless area of South Dakota, which is desolate following the Custer massacre. The town of Deadwood is attracting undesirables including drifters, fortune seekers, and tyrants. In an authentic depiction of what life would have been like at the time, prostitutes are stuck in this dead-end town with no way of getting out. Crime, death, destruction, and ill-minded folks populate the area. With no law enforcement to speak of, the town of Deadwood becomes a free-for-all. Wild Bill Hickok is a main character in "Deadwood - The Complete First Season" and seems to run wild, instilling fear and desperation in others. This 6-disc set western includes bonus material, such as a featurette for "The Real Deadwood", a feature about the making of "Deadwood", and a two-part interview with David Milch.

EXCELLENT PRODUCTION on the founding of the Black Hills and Deadwood

Once you get past the bloody violence and cussing, it is a very good production on the founding of the Black Hills and Deadwood. The casting, sets, costuming, dialogue, writing and direction were all GREAT!!!! It shows a much more realistic view of the Black Hills than earlier westerns on the same subject. It is missing the twin city of Lead, where most of the Homestake Gold Mine was, the largest gold mine in North America - all taken from the Native Americans. I had a lot of relatives emigrate there from Europe around the turn of the century to work in the mine and establish businesses and even met Martha Jane Cannary and Charles Windolph.

A HBO SERIES THAT WAS NEVER FINISHED

This series is very engaging, once you get past the horrific use of the F word (2980 times) and other profanities. It also has some historical accuracies, as Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Jack McCall, Sol Star, and Al Swearengen were real Old West Characters involved with Deadwood. But the Worst Fault is that the series abruptly ended after the 3rd year!! In the words of the (recently) late Powers Boothe “we were looking forward to the 4th season, as they were negotiating for a fifth season. Then we were told that the Deadwood series was finished”! David Milch gets the credit for all of the profanities, which he tries to justify during a session with Keith Carradine in disc #6. Poor Keith Carradine had to listen to this egocentric Jerk Brag about himself for 60 ...

  • Horse Opera? No, not enough horses.

Here's the browns, ochers, earthtones. Muddy streets and the unwashed slogging through that muck. Perfect. Here's gutter language as a cornerstone of communication. Here's the best of the human spirit demonstrated by murderous thugs and the most base flaws revealed in heroes. Here's rampant bigotry and misogyny alongside equality in the face of adversity and respect for the customs of others. Perfect. This is the reason that network TV is dead. This is the reason that the moral majority and their narrow minded defenders are neither moral nor the majority. Here's a taste of people on the raw edge of surviving, slaves to their lowest desires and still capable of altruism. Here's the advent of civilization raised out of the mud and muck. Here's a class ...

  • That "Vile" program Deadwood

I am a very big fan of a good western and Deadwood is the best I've seen. I read so many reviews that just complain about the nudity, the horrible foul language and even the gore. This HBO Masterpiece just doesn't hold back in depicting what the west was REALLY like in the 1870's. Deadwood is so authentic in every way. The characters, the wardrobe, the architecture, the whole set! All of it. It's truly like taking a trip back in time. Oh, and the character development. extraordinary! I have seen very very few Westerns with such authenticity. To name the few, the is "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman is the only one that comes to mind with the level of authenticity of Deadwood. "Wild Bill", with Jeff Bridges and "The Outlaw Josey ...

  • Hobbes in the American West

I see this series a fascinating exploration of politics--defined as the use and distribution of power among groups over limited resources. It's an Hobbesian world where mutual suspicion reigns, where there is "perpetual warre", and where life can be "nasty, brutish, and short." It's no accident the earnest preacher in the first season has a cerebral disorder and goes bonkers. But it's not completely bleak, and just like Hobbes would predict, the people work together to create order and justice, albeit in informal ways, and in fits and starts. And, just like the real world, there are moments where love and mercy do, however briefly, get the upper hand. Along with that, great storytelling and acting.
