Davis's remarkable life is certainly well-trod territory. Nevertheless, through interviews with close friends and confidants who had never spoken publicly before, Birkbeck digs up many startling details., A piece of investigative journalism that unravels what happened to Davis' estate, and reveals more about the man...Birkbeck spoke to people that have never spoken before -- and the portrait of Sammy that emerges is difficult, demanding, and ultimately tragic., Birkbeck has killer leads, gripping kickers and sensational descriptions. This cinematic book reads more like a detective story than a traditional 'life of., Tremendous. . . Birkbeck tells the epic of Sammy Davis Jr... from his Harlem boyhood to his wrenching deathbed (he died of cancer in 1990) in his Beverly Hills mansion, where various hangers-on, seeing the circling vultures, stripped his corpse even before it was a corpse., With a journalist's eye toward a great story, author Matt Birkbeck leads readers through a decades-long financial mess including cover-ups. mob connections, political friendships and snubbing..Un-put-down-able.Stunning.

AOK. Item as described, reasonable condition (as described), excellent price, reasonable packing and shipping time, no problems. Thanks. (Sorry, I don't do star ratings when some are automatic, as it's unfair to buyers to have eBay pre-empt any of the scores. You should complain to eBay, as your star ratings would have been very high.) I can't rate the product until I read it. It's unfair for eBay to require a product rating in order to send feedback! The guys at eBay are heavily into control.

  • The sad decline of Sammy Davis Jr.

In his career Sammy Davis Jr. made $50 million and spent it like it was going out of style. Conversely his widow Altovese spent the last years of her life in poverty. This book reads like a horror story about how management takes advantage of unsophisticated stars with respect to their finances. It also tells the story of Davis's less then steller lifestyle and the chaos he left behind.A great page turner if you liked Davis or ar interested in the darker side of show business.

  • Compelling Read

I first heard about this book when a local radio station had a live interview with the author Matthew Birkbeck. I bid on it immediately. The book makes for a fast compelling read. A hard to put down account of one who could arguabely be considered the greatest entertainer of the 20th century because of his triple threat ability, singing, dancing, and acting. Heartbreaking story that makes one wish things could have ended differently for him (Sammy) much like the tragedy of Elvis Presley. Highly recommend it.

  • WOW!

This has got to be one of the best books that I've read in months! Though I'm not a big fan of Sammy Davis Jr., the book sounded like a good read so I took my chances on buying it... and it didn't disappoint! Its a real page-turner, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in him. This is what all biographies should be!
