Having first seen the Humphrey Bogart version first, I think I was quite spoiled. Yes, I've heard that this remake is closer to the book, but I can't shake the fact that I just prefer Bogart over Mitchum. And, being made in glorious black and white (which is perfect for Film Noir), I just couldn't get used to color for the film. Plus, at times, the two stories are nearly word-for-word identical--so watching this film became a real bore. It's a shame but I just couldn't accept this film because of these reasons. Instead, it's a shame the producers didn't just pick an entirely new Raymond Chandler story or that of some other mystery writer. Then, perhaps, I could have enjoyed it more.
If like me you are a fan of the older movies; and you have not seen this one, you have missed one of the greatest films of it's time and era. Oh yes, there have been many play the role of Philip Marlow, even big Rob (Robert Mitchum) had a go, in an update of this very film; but no one has ever played Marlow quite like bogie (Humphery Bogart) Still I guess, no one could ever play any role quite like him anyway..he was unique and will ever stand alone as the greatest of his kind..The Big Sleep then is yet another conquest in his career which included some of the greatest films ever..African Queen and Casablanca to name just two others in which he gave an outstanding performance. Buy this film, enjoy this film, you will never get tired of watching one of Hollywoods real legends showing you just why he was the greatest of the 'good bad guys'Read full review
An old classic. Bogart and Bacall both excellent but I think that it was their first movie together. Good story - mystery murder - plenty of wisecracks. Quite enjoyed it but then I do like a lot of the old films
i think when you see a bogart film you know it's going to be entertaning & with bacal i think they made a great team i also liked them in to have and have not and bogart in the african queen
