About this product

Product Information

Director John Dahl switches genres from film noir (THE LAST SEDUCTION, RED ROCK WEST) to military actioner with THE GREAT RAID. Following the 1942 Bataan Death March, thousands of U.S. and Filipino soldiers were imprisoned by the Japanese in a POW camp in Cabantauan in the Philippines. Brutalized, starved, and tortured, the prisoners languished in the camp for nearly three years. But in January 1945, an American battalion, with the help of Filipino guerrillas, planned a daring mission--some called it suicide--to rescue the five hundred U.S. soldiers still alive there. The film is told in glorious detail. The story is based on two books, THE GREAT RAID: RESCUING THE DOOMED GHOSTS OF BATAAN AND CORREGIDOR by William B. Breuer and GHOST SOLDIERS: THE EPIC ACCOUNT OF WORLD WAR II'S GREATEST RESCUE MISSION by Hampton Sides. In addition, several men involved in the raid served as consultants on the project. The result is a thrilling, agonizing, and unforgettable war movie like they used to make in the 1940s and 1950s, a celebration of the human spirit. THE GREAT RAID stars Benjamin Bratt as Lt. Colonel Mucci, an offbeat military man who puts his faith in young Captain Prince (James Franco) to lead the dangerous mission. Among the men imprisoned in the camp are Joseph Fiennes as the ailing Major Gibson and Marton Csokas as Captain Redding, who is always trying to escape. Connie Nielsen adds romantic tension as a war widow smuggling much-needed medicine into the camp.

The Fifth Rangers finally see Action in WWII .

After extensive training the Fifth Rangers finally get to use their field craft to retrieve over 500 US American prisoners held by the Japanese this entire mission is over stepping for the American Military command's and more then 25,000 US troops are used but this story just covers the recovery of the American Prisoners and for those who like myself who had their fathers involved in this landing in one way or another it helps to understand what the struggle in a small part was about .

  • Teens SHOULD see this PG-13 movie!

In the Pacific theatre of World War II, thousands of Americans became prisoners of war after the Philippines fell to the Japanese. Years later, the Japanese response to Allied front finally approaching POW camps was to eliminate the evidence. The Great Raid tells the true story of the most successful rescue mission in US military history, as an Army Ranger company endeavor to save the men of one such prison camp before they are killed by their captors. The PG-13 rating is for war related violence, but the fighting is good guy vs. bad guy and the good guy wins. There are numerous examples of positive character traits exhibited in the movie, including self-sacrifice, teamwork, courage under fire and leadership. It is unfortunate that this movie did not receive greater success while ...

  • Fine Film, Important Story

The Great Raid is not pure history--some characters have been combined and some facts condensed--but it is based on actual events during WWII, and tells rhe story of a little-known U.S. Ranger raid on Cabanatuan POW camp in the Philippines to rescue 511 Americans who survived the Bataan Death March, and 3 subsequent years of brutal treatment as prisoners of the Japanese. In terms of drama, script, photography, pacing, and acting it's a very well done film, exploring both the harsh lives of the seemingly-forgotten prisoners, and the preparations of the Rangers and the Filipino underground to take on a daring and almost impossible mission to free the captives. There is tension, suspense, excitement, and a racing-the-clock climax. There are scenes of brutality and violence, unfortunately ...

  • Great movie

I'm a fan of history and if you are as well then you have to get this movie. Alot of action towards the end and true horrific accountability.
