Franciscan priest Rohr (The Naked Now) is a big-picture kind of thinker when it comes to characterizing the human journey. Life has two halves; life follows the pattern of a hero/heroine's journey; life is disorderly and inherently tragic. Elders and mystics are more inclined to such sweeping and subtle observations, and Rohr, born in 1943, fits in both categories. Rohr writes about spirituality in broad terms, but is deeply grounded in the writings and thinkers of his Catholic religious tradition. His discussion of familiar theological concerns--the necessity of suffering, the opportunities provided by mistakes--is fresh because imaginative and vigorous. His metaphors ("discharging your loyal soldier"), paradoxes (see the book's title), and arguments are not, however, easy to follow or even easy to summarize. They will frustrate some readers, but delight others who are attentive enough to follow the connections Rohr makes. Not likely I will purchase a 'USED' book again in the future!
I have trouble reading smaller print... so I would have purchased a copy of the Book with larger print and larger book dimensions in turn. The previous owner used a pen (not pencil) to outline passages they found relevant to their own needs. Had I known this I probably would NOT have purchased a Used Book and opposed to a New Book. I was surprised that this had not been checked beforehand. A defaced book is not really worth anything after it's been scribbled in or highlighted wouldn't you agree? Sincerely, Graham F. Steele

Thought Provoking and Insightful
Thought provoking and inspiring, Falling Upward gives us insight into the low points of our lives, asserting that they are actually high points, the very experiences that bring us closer to God. It is through the lens of maturity that this can be fully understood and this is why the latter part of life is full of spiritual richness. The reader becomes keenly aware that suffering is an intrinsec part of spiritual growth. It is an essential read for a catholic and I believe that those of other religions might find this book both enjoyable and meaningful. If you finish this book feeling as if you have only scratched the surface and want to read more, try Rohr's previous book, The Naked Now. It delves deeply into one's holiness and spirituality.
