Reviews
"This backyard fruit tree owner's manual should come with every fruit tree, or, better yet, get it while you are still deciding what trees to plant."-- Pam Pierce, author of Golden Gate Gardening and Wildly Successful Plants: Northern California, "Ann Ralph argues her case for pruning with such deep knowledge, and wit, and obvious affection for fruit trees, that you cannot help but be converted. A delightful and useful book!"-- Mike Madison, author of Blithe Tomato, "Beautiful and essential. Ann Ralph is your good-natured guide to the sometimes intimidating task of planting bare root fruit trees, thinning fruit, and that nail-biter of them all: pruning."-- Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer

You say you're land poor? Grow LITTLE fruit trees and be rich!

We live in the Piedmont of North Carolina--a prime area for growing peaches, apples, and almost anything else that has fruit in its branches. But we have only a small front yard and no back yard. Fortunately, the front yard is on our south side and has full sun most of the day. I found Ann Ralph's book through an article in 'This Old House' magazine. We're ordering 3 bare root peach trees that we'll plant in a tight circle 18 inches apart. With Ms Ralph's excellent directions, we'll prune the three trees so that they will essentially grow as a single tree about 10 feet in diameter, but only 4 - 5 feet tall. This means that we'll be able to care for and harvest fruit without climbing ladders or hauling out pole trimming equipment. The trees we've ordered fruit at slightly different ...

  • Best Fruit Book I purchased! I now know how to maintain a semi-dwarf fruit tree.

I purchased 3 books to learn more about growing a Santa Fe semi-dwarf plum and a semi-dwarf McIntosh in Albuquerque, NM. I almost read this book from cover to cover when I picked it up and opened it. The information in writing and pictures is great! Since my tres I purchased this fall were 2-3 years old already and 8 feet tall I wanted to prune them this winter so I can maintain the size and amount of fruit that is produced. After reading this book I just pruned both trees down to 6 feet in height. I mostly performed thinning with 1 or 2 heading cuts each tree. This book helped me a great deal. I strongly recommend to someone wanting to learn how to get the best out of their fruit trees! My neighbors have cherry trees that are now 25 feet tall and neither is producing much fruit. Now I ...

  • What you don't know can cost you YEARS of WORK!

I'm 66 years old and grew up on a farm. I was taught the standard orchard management practices of the last 3000 years. I didn't know what I didn't know - only what I'd been taught. I struggled for all these years - plant trees, then tear them out when they got too big. I just could NOT keep them small with winter pruning. Years of effort - wasted! Then this little book. The author describes ME to a 'T'. I'll be honest - I just read the book. I don't know if this practice works or not. I DO know it goes against everything I have been taught for 60 years. I DO know that what I've been doing for 60 years DOES NOT WORK! I do know that I did NOT know how to grow a small tree. This little book gives me the best hope for future success. Now I have a plan - starts with tearing out ...

  • Great book, worth the read and price

The product is great, worth every dime. However the billing was insane! my $5.48 book came out as three separate charges on my credit card, which of course were all smaller amounts adding up to the total. Unfortunately this looked like fraud to the cc company so they put a block on my card!
