Synopsis
Nathaniel, a magician's apprentice, summons up the djinni Bartimaeus and instructs him to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from the powerful magician Simon Lovelace., Presenting a thrilling new voice in children's literature-a witty, gripping adventure story featuring a boy and his not-so-tame djinni. Nathaniel is a young magician's apprentice, taking his first lessons in the arts of magic. But when a devious hotshot wizard named Simon Lovelace ruthlessly humiliates Nathaniel in front of everyone he knows, Nathaniel decides to kick up his education a few notches and show Lovelace who's boss. With revenge on his mind, he masters one of the toughest spells of all: summoning the all-powerful djinni, Bartimaeus. But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand, Nathaniel finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder, blackmail, and revolt. Set in a modern-day London spiced with magicians and mayhem, this extraordinary, funny, pitch-perfect thriller will dazzle the myriad fans of Artemis Fowl and the His Dark Materials trilogy. And with the rights sold in more than a dozen countries, and a major motion picture in the works, the Bartimaeus trilogy is on the fast track to becoming a classic.

  • Superb!

OK, I started reading this with a little doubt about it. I have never heard of the author and don't like booke about wizards and stuff. The book was amazing, I couldn't stop reading it. The style of writing is marvolous, it's whitty and descriptive but still keeps the story moving. Not only this but it really sets the scene for the other 2 books in the trilogy. The premise that the magicians gain their power from enslaving demons is a good angle and gets the reader thinking about social casts. Very good. I recomend reading it whilst eating a hot cross bun or a beef/chicken sandwich. Avoid eating sticky toffie pudding because you will get gloop on the book.

  • Disappointing series

Bought this book as I enjoyed the Lockwood & Co. series by Stroud. However, this book was long, drawn out, done from different characters perspectives which seemed unnecessary and confusing at times. The book did not hold my interest and in the third/last book character, Nathaniel, had basically learned nothing he was still impatient, vengeful, and a nasty piece of work with no empathy for others. I read the first 2 chapters of the last book, after slugging through the 1st & 2nd books and decided that was enough so jumped to the last few chapters and he has changed for the better. Why? didn't really care so finished it and now am going to donate the series to my library. Love books, collect books, re-read my books but this one has to go.

  • Bartimaeus

I am not a book lover, unfortunetly. When I was younger, I was forced to read so many stupid books in school, that I hate reading now. My sister, who is the ultimate book worm, picked this book up for me and told me to read just the first 3 pages. I was hooked. It was one of the morst tauntilizing, wittiest books I have ever read, (- and I have read a ton). I read it with complete pessimism, ready to totally shoot it down, but I was completely thrown off guard. The book pages turned into an actuall movie screen! It was amazing. I was so hooked that I would actually read it instead of going to the theaters. One second you think you know what's going on, the next, all of a sudden that short little side story plays a huge role. I love it because a young boy is so powerful at ...

  • definately not Potter

I bought this book because someone said I might like it because of my love for Harry Potter. Unfortunately, I didn't love it..I thought it was ehhh ok? the characters are so unlikeable. I felt that the author wanted the reader to enjoy the footnotes and think they were clever but I felt like he was being condescending. I dont think i will read the rest of the series.

  • Good, fast-paced novel.

A good and fast-paced novel. Written for children but enjoyable by all ages. The hardcover version has nice, large print and isn't hard to read. I would recommend if you want a smaller book for pleasure reading.
