Great Starter Set
This is a great starter set for the price, which was less than $200 including shipping around the holidays. The engine is metal and comes with conductor and engineer figures (many introductory Lionel engines do not). It also comes with remote control, engine sounds (chuffing, bell and crew talk) and smoke function, which all sound great and work well. The one drawback on the lower priced starter sets is that the tender is plastic. Higher priced sets (those with Berkshire engines, for example) have an all metal tender. I have both. No difference in sound, just a cost/durability consideration. The other cost tradeoff with the starter lionchief engines is don't lose the remote! Unlike the higher-end lionchief plus engines (where you can run train from remote or a conventional ... A great starter set.
At first, I wasn't sure that a 0-8-0 locomotive was going to be the way to go, but, as it turned out, it WAS the way to go. I bought the set for my 8 years old granddaughter. Her first set. This was perfect for her hands to place on the track. Wonderful smoke, excellent sounds, and overall great train set. I was not sure that I would be a fan of the Fastrack, but it is perfect. Place the track on a flat surface and push together until it "clicks". I did have a very small problem with a dead section of track but a quick visit to Lionel on Youtube and it was an easy fix by just slightly bending the center pins for a better conductivity. Great price and everything works as advertised. The LIONCHIEF is a remote control for the engine, using my standard Lionel transformer. Speed adjustments are smooth and the sound is like the more expensive Railsounds that Lionel has! This is something really liked by children- easy to use and buttons to press.

Exactly what we hoped!
This train is great for a first train for kids probably 8 and up. I especially like the easy snap tracks because they can be set up on low pile carpeting without any problems! No need for a wooden board like older models. The product came as described and shipped quickly.
