About this product

Product Information

Laundries were once ubiquitous in British and American cities-products of the same historical process that created steel mills and railroads. Unlike the more familiar examples of industrialization, these cleanliness factories remained powerfully identified with domesticity. In Steam Laundries, Arwen Mohun explores broader issues of how gender has ......

Reviews
"Steam Laundries represents a new generation of history of technology scholarship." -- Betsy Hunter Bradley, Public Historian, "Steam Laundries is an important contribution to our understanding of the gendered history of technology in Britain and the United States." -- Jay Kleinberg, Times Literary Supplement, ''An important piece of work...Given the awesome task Mohun set herself, the work succeeds remarkably well...In sum, this is a work that should provoke others to turn their attention to the array of important but neglected topics it treats, but by its own breadth it should challenge its successors to look broadly as well.''--Judith A. McGaw, editor of 'Early American Technology: Making and Doing Things from the Colonial Era to 1850', "Steam Laundries explores the permeable boundaries between technology and culture, home and work, and service and industry to develop an alternative perspective on the process of industrialization. Mohun's scholarship not only succeeds but also compels us to consider what lessons might be learned from other neglected industries." -- Nancy Page Fernandez, Journal of American History, "Arwen Mohun has written a fascinating account of the rise, growth, and decline of a little-noticed industry... This is a significant book that advances scholarship on the relationship of technology, gender, and culture."--Patricia Malcolmson, Technology and Culture

The item is as described and works! I'm very happy with my purchase and definitly reccomend this seller as I could easily see myself buying from them again. The only qualm I have is that they sent it in a thin cardboard/paper envelope that offered no water proofing of any kind, luckily the item arrived with no damage but the cd itself was loose in the case and the case was itself loose in this cardboar paper envelope with no additional padding or protection. Could work on packing stuff better.

The item is fine but the packaging is terrible considering how far it travelled. Also they are listed as Us seller but it’s shipping for the Uk - this is why it took weeks for me to get the item. If I would have known before that it would take that long I would be as upset as I am now. When I reached out to them they did not mention it and I found out on my own. I reached out because I was concerned that it had been a week and no movement.
