Thief: The Dark Project focuses on stealth and strategy, rather than the familiar first-person run-and-gun approach. Instead of calling for straight-up, in-your-face fighting, this game rewards subterfuge. Players take the role of Garrett, a cynical but skilled thief. The character began mastering the art in his youth, by picking pockets, and progressed to prowling and lock-picking. This adventure chronicles the life of crime chosen by Garrett, through a series of more than a dozen missions.<br><br>As he moves through each area, Garrett must time his advances and stick to the shadows whenever possible. He'll stalk enemies with an assortment of weapons and use a variety of special-purpose arrows including "water," "fire," "moss," and "rope." Thief: The Dark Project features a game engine element dubbed "Act/React Technology," which is designed to create realistic, interactive environments. Wood burns when it's exposed to fire, for example, and water freezes in cold temperatures. Often, Garrett can make creative use of such realistic reactions to solve a problem or get himself out of a jam.

An Old Game Worth Playing
Product was sold at a fair price for such an old game. The plastic booklets helped prevent the discs from being damaged during shipment. I did have to do some tweaking in order to get this game to run on WIN 10 OS, and it does run well. The graphics aren't top notch, but I'm not complaining. This game is fun to play and worth having .

A true stealth game
I played this game a decade ago. Since then, I have been continuously trying to find decent sneaker games. They all paled to Thief which epitomized the stealth genre of games. I've played Hitman (all of them), Splinter Cell games, and plenty more but still never felt they were true stealth games. I demand a first-person shooter style so I that I actually feel like I am *in* the game, not hovering above like a floating camera watching some character do all the moves. Immersion in the game just isn't there without the first-person view. You don't feel vertigo when leaning over a beam across an abyss if you're watching yourself doing the leaning. In some missions, the haunts were far more scary than zombies, ghouls, mutants, or ghouls in other less-than-stealthy games. I got fed up ... I played this game a decade ago. I got fed up looking for real stealth games that could play on my old hardware so I went back to this game (mostly for the fan missions). This game might have the largest count of fan missions. These are written by fans of the games who chose to endure the tribulations of using the archaic dromed level editor. Between Thief 1 and 2, there are hundreds of fan missions to extend your gameplay time. Some fan missions are better than than the original missions. When you install this game, and because it wasn't designed to run under NT-based versions of Windows, be sure to run "setup.exe -lgntforce" to start its install program. This bypasses the test of whether or not a compatible version of Windows is used.

Let's face it. This game is old, at being over 10 years. Getting this game is still easy though. Playing it on current drivers is not. You need to look up and find and download Indeo drivers to work on XP and Vista. HOWEVER, if you are running on multi-processors, you need to assign only one processor to the game, or else it will load up and freeze on you. Thief: The Dark Project is one of those games that set the standard for its genre. This game may not have the graphics we come to expect anymore but the gameplay and AI are better in this than many of the newest titles out there. Don't let the age of this game fool you, you will have more fun and challenge with Thief than anything put out within the last 5 months. The game draws you in and makes you really feel like you are sneaking through noble mansions, dark caves and dimly lit city streets. There is a good amount of gameplay for the money and if you want more, and you will there are 2 follow ups that don't let you down.
