In On Becoming Babywise, we put forth our foundational belief that babies, whose tender lives are guided by a predictable feed-wake-sleep routine, tend to function at optimal levels compared to babies who are not given the same advantage. That same belief guides Babywise II. However, in these later months, new growth variables come into play requiring a new level of parental insight and management to keep up with the changes. Take food for example. Mealtime for the five and six month old is no longer a simple biologi¬cal drive initiated by the sucking reflex. Now mealtimes are part of a very complex, conscious interaction between child and parent, food and drink, preference and need, likes and dislikes--all coupled with "must do" and "won't do!" Waketime is no longer a passive hour of an immobile infant observing the world from his blanket. Once mobility is achieved, Mom and Dad must continually chase after him just to keep him safe.
