This game has a fairly standard structure for RPGs of it's generation. Combat is turn based and occurs on a seperate screen from the rest of the game. Where Breath of Fire really shines is in the special abilities each character has. For example, there is a character named Bo who is an experienced hunter, and can actually hunt animals on the overworld map. Most of the characters have some sort of special ability like this, which gives this game a level of immersion which was rare for it's time. However, the number of special abilities in this game is also a detriment. There are several cases where you get a new ability which can either only be used in areas you never need to visit once you get them, or are instantly outclassed by abilities you can get immediately after them, without requiring any extra effort. This game compares favorably to other ports of SNES RPGS in terms of the variety of abilities, but it falls short in other areas. Many of the marquee SNES RPGS which were rereleased on the GBA got some sort of extra content, like the bonus dungeons in FF4 and FF6, but this game is the same as the original. It also suffers in terms of sound quality, which can be quite jarring. Ultimately, tis is a great game to play for fun, and you could reasonably expect to spend a few afternoons beating it. Just don't expect it to last much longer than that.Read full review
Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: T.R.C. Breath of Fire by Capcom for the Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Micro and Nintendo DS. This is yet another port from the SNES to the GBA system. Breath of fire is one of the lesser-known RPG’s that turned out to be really good. You start out as a young teen and your town is under attack from the DARK dragons. Your older sister sacrifices herself to save you and the town. Thus starts your quest for revenge. You meet up with a Princess, a Thief, a Bad Merchant, a Wolfen-Hunter, a Mole person, the Brute Ox, and a Sorceress. All of them have talents you will need to get your revenge. Be prepared for a 20 hour-long quest. Graphics 7/10 – For a GBA based game the graphics are good. There are some movie-like full motion videos. Music 5/10 – Same as the SNES version, Capcom could have updated it. Gameplay 9/10 – Fun and addictive, some of the mini-games like fishing, digging, and hunting were lots of fun. Battle System 6/10 – The same turn based system we all know and love, with the addition of being able to turn into a dragon and morph into a mix of the people on your team. The magic system is earned in levels and by finding the spells. Overall 7/10 - The game was fun and kept me entertained until the very end. My only complaint is that they could have updated the story and the music a bit. Burn Baby Burn!Read full review
I had played the 3rd game on the original Playstation, and I had played the 2nd game for the GBA. However, this original game holds a special place in my heart. I just love everything about it. The story, the pacing, the graphics, the gameplay -- but most importantly, I really love the characters.
