Synopsis
Ciudad Juarez lies just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. A once-thriving border town, it now resembles a failed state. Infamously known as the place where women disappear, its murder rate exceeds that of Baghdad. In Murder City , Charles Bowden-one of the few journalists who spent extended periods of time in Juarez-has written an extraordinary account of what happens when a city disintegrates. Interweaving stories of its inhabitants-a beauty queen who was raped, a repentant hitman, a journalist fleeing for his life-with a broader meditation on the town's descent into anarchy, Bowden reveals how Juarez's culture of violence will not only worsen, but inevitably spread north. Heartbreaking, disturbing, and unforgettable, Murder City was written at the height of his powers and established Bowden as one of America's leading journalists., Ciudad Juárez lies just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. This delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!

Arrived 13 days after purchase. Digipak 3 CD came in brown paper packaging coated on the inside. Not much protection for cardboard digipack, somehow it arrived in near perfect condition. Could have used some bubble wrap /sturdy cardboard. Tracking gave no information. Messaged them & they assured me it was on it's way. Location reads Florida. They ship from all over / my package read Jamaica, NY. Got a 3 CD Deluxe Edition in GREAT CONDITION at BARGAIN PRICE ! Nervous ride/Happy ending 😀👍

  • Worse than you ever thought...

I have traveled extensively in Mexico, including to Juarez about twenty five years ago, and have seen the slow deterioration of the government and the rise of the cartels. Juarez is the center of all that to some degree and this book outlines the total depravity of the government on all levels. Violence, drug sales, smuggling human and otherwise and at the same time the people seemed to have learned to live with the violence. If you read this book there is no way you will ever see Mexico again no matter if you have positive experiences there or not. I had a house there for 35 years at a beach near Puerto Vallarta and my last trip to Mexico was to sell it. I wouldn't go back for any reason. Too bad. I loved it there for over fifty years.....
