The stands themselves are solid and can be cold or hot worked to customized to your specimen. In my case expensive petrified wood slabs and slab ends. I install black end cap protectors on the legs and ends and use black electrical tape to protect the specimen and surface. I prefer these metal stands over the acrylic ones.

I bought an agatized ammonite, cut in half and polished.
Not only was it exactly like the photo, the opposite sides (not shown) had these unexpected iridescent patches. Very nice, and the price is very reasonable.
