Reviews
'Cunningly shifting sympathies among virtually all the players, Clare spotlights first Helewise, then Josse, in a detecting competition that lifts the partners above their predictable gender roles ... immersing them in a suddenly engrossing tale.', "A well and gently written medieval series featuring Abbess Helewise and her friend, the French knight Josse d'Acquin...The relationship between the widowed abbess and the soldier of fortune is done with a firm, light touch...Readers will be impatient to have this oddly matched but engaging duo back again." Booklist, 'proof That a Writer of Medieval Crime Fiction Can Deliver Something Fresh', 'a Worthy Heir to Ellis Peters, Though Grittier, Materialises', 'a Rich and Compelling Mystery'

I've read the the other books in this series and this is the best one to date. You get a lot of Helewise's back story from before she entered the Abbey. It is well written & very engrossing.
