Not The End of The World, Just The End of the Day
Pontypool is one of those titles that I'd had my eye on for a while, being a degenerate addict to all media depicting The End. For whatever reason, I consistently hesitated in picking it up. It seemed like the last three or four zombie movies I'd nabbed were big let-downs. Maybe that factored-in to my long wait. Regardless, I am very happy that I finally watched Pontypool. I've never understood plot summaries in reviews - so you won't get one here. In place of a synopsis I'll offer my likes/dislikes. 'Cause chances are if we liked/disliked similar flicks, that trend will continue. So first off understand that I love Romero's first three Of The Deads for the treatment the characters receive and the way he depicts humanity in general. The zombies and ... So first off understand that I love Romero's first three Of The Deads for the treatment the characters receive and the way he depicts humanity in general. The zombies and gore are of tertiary importance to me, at best. 28 Days Later falls into this category, too. Although the whole "flesh-eating-blood-guts-monsters special effects" is not important to me, I don't feel that the zombies should be funny. So any of the various zombie flicks where they're treated like slapstick, one-liner machines, I hate. That doesn't mean that a zombie movie can't be comical! Sean of the Dead was an excellent movie! Notice, though, that the comedy comes from the characters and that the characters themselves are quite strong. I even enjoyed Zombieland; just not as much. Cormac McCarthy's, "The Road", is probably my favorite book. Admittedly, there are no zombies, per se, however the world as we know it is clearly over. People are dealing with it in very different ways - that interests me. Of course, one common thread throughout all these stories is a constant sense of rising tension. Suffice to say, if the amount of stars you give a movie has a direct relationship with the amount of explosions or on-screen fatalities you see, we have differing tastes. You'll love Pontypool if you have similar tastes to my own. The acting of the three main, on-screen characters is fantastic. I realize that some of the movies I liked (and I'm looking hard at you, "...of The Dead" series) does not represent great acting. Pontypool does! These actors know how to convey tension without all the shlock you're used to from other zombie shows. The writing is also superb. It would have to be, considering the vast majority of the movie is set in a basement. Nothing ever feels contrived. The lead's delivery on the sparingly-used jokes is also outstanding. I still laugh on repeat viewings when he tells his ex-agent that Osama is singing. Don't get me wrong, this is not a comedy! However his quips provide some well-placed, much-needed breaks in the tension. What most impressed me - and that's saying something because nearly every facet of this Pontypool impressed - was the depth of this movie. You will find no one-dimensional characters here; with the possible exception of the late-entering doctor. Even Dr. Mendez serves his purpose, however, in the grand scheme of things. Given the character limits imposed by ebay, I need to be frugal with the following; but bear in mind someone could go to great length discussing what lies under the screen here. The issues this movie deals with using artistic grace are at the same time interesting and relevant regardless of time period, geography, and cultural background. This is a great example of why I love consuming art (and it is art) that covers this subject matter. No, it's not about the zombies. It's about us.

Ok, so the premise sounds cool--a virus that is spread by language, which then turns people into zombies. But it's not explained why zombies, as opposed to say, the flu! The acting and execution of the script are HORRENDOUS! The characters act like they didn't know each other. The DJ actqs as if he'd been doing the job at the station forever--even though--presumably--it was his first day. He gets into pissy fights with the station manager--as if they've known each other forever. The characters kept having familiarity/ stranger issues. Then you have the token cute/sexy girl--so that she can die horribly and then come back to life.
