  • Great actors, guilty pleasure

Who knew Bob Dylan was a chainsaw sculptor? In the same film with Vincent Price? The lineup of well-known actors, mostly having fun, is a hoot throughout this trifle. Yeah, some scenes look like pure improv where the actors barely keep from cracking up (especially Hopper-Turturro in cowboy hats), but who knew Hopper -- in full Jersey-mob dialect more than a decade before the Sopranos -- could play sax and fly a helicopter? Joe Pesci, an actual Jersey boy, as one of the main bad guys (whoda thought?) is so over-the-top that he refused to be credited, and a later cut of the film was so badly hacked up that it lists Allen Smithee as director instead of Hopper, but the New Mexico burning man, some of the scrolling signboard art, and a few other scenes are oddly engaging. And who would have ...

  • Backtrack

I worked on this movie in 1988 and it took 5 years for them to have a "Cast and Crew" screening. That was in 1993. I thought it was pretty bad when I saw it them. I am getting together a collection of all the movies that I have done so I bought this one. My impression in '93 was way off. It is probably one of the worst movies of the last 20 years. It is odd because I still remember the script being one of the best. It is a great study of what can go wrong in a movie. What a cast though! How could you miss with these actors? Jodi went on to win the Academy Award soon after, even though Dennis told her she couldn't act.

  • Hopper’s quirky character makes the movie.

I found Hopper’s character quirky, intriguing and almost charming. This, given his reputation, was a perfect role for him and quintessential Hopper.

  • Great mix of drama and comedy!

Jodie as usual keeps you riveted on her character, in this case an artist who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hopper does a great job as the love struck hit man. Lots of other "interesting" characters as well. Joe Pesci is hilarious as a "boss". Recommended

  • Jodie Foster is a Sweetheart

Foster shines and Hopper was great.
