Classic design with modern technology
I was shopping for a self-contained radio that does not have multi-function controls, or a menu-driven interface that hides features so that you need a manual every time you want to listen to a station. I like the old-fashioned radios from before 1970, the ones that only have a few basic controls and no unnecessary clutter. A classic style of design that does not need any explanation and will remain intuitive to anyone no matter which corner of the planet they are from. But, most radios like this are antiques that barely work. Scratchy-sounding tuners and volume controls. Too many hours of wear & tear. What I want is a brand new radio like those classics, but with a modern tuner that pulls in a weak station and doesn't let it drift. A speaker that doesn't sound like it came from the dollar store. This Crosley simply does what I want. It does not need any explanation, the controls are obvious - perfect for waking up when you haven't had coffee yet. You can turn this on, tune a station in and set how loud it plays without needing to think about the radio itself. This is perfect for me, it doesn't intrude into my space. On the plus side, it sounds really nice. A little bit deep pitched, thanks to a tuned port built into the rear of the case. It sounds better than a standard set of computer speakers. Which is an interesting thing because there's an input jack that might have been intended for a CD player, but could be connected to a computer. I haven't tested this yet, but the on/off control has an auxiliary position, and seeing as the radio also has an output jack for headphones, it might be possible to also continue using your computer speakers if those happen to sound better. Just use the radio control to switch between the computer and the tuner. I'm not sure if a stereo signal will pass through like this without getting turned into mono - I haven't found a double-ended cable yet to try it out. But there's no reason why you couldn't use this radio as the only speaker for your computer. Personally, I think stereo sound is not necessary unless your doing something that requires it. So, for a business executive or cubical worker who doesn't need extraneous clutter but still wants some sort of audio on their work station, this radio would be perfect for reducing the stress load. The antenna on this radio is very smartly designed. It mounts directly to a standard 75-ohm threaded cable connector. This means that you can unscrew the antenna and use an outdoor antenna instead. Or buy a new antenna and replace a broken one without tearing the radio apart. The antenna connector is deeply recessed so that the built-in antenna stays flush with the back of the radio. That does mean that if you wish to remove the antenna, you will need needle nose pliers to reach the nut in the recess. The power supply is outside of the radio, like any typical wall wart. This one uses a second cord for the wall plug, so plugging into a crowded power strip is not a problem. It's a standard 12 volt DC supply, so finding a replacement is super easy provided you keep to 1.25 amps & higher for the output rating. This means that there's no reason why this radio wont work in countries with mains voltages other than 110VAC - provided you find a replacement power supply. Any 12VDC 2 amp supply with either the same DC connector or just cut the cords and swap the original plug into place. Keep in mind the outside of the connector is the negative with the center conductor positive.
