Silent. As for speed... unless you're the type who stands in front of a microwave insisting it cook faster!!!... you should be more than pleased with this pocket rocket.

I have bought used from WD before and had a bad experience as that HDD died on me, but I hope this drive lasts me longer, as I intend to use it often. Overall great deal monetarily, but we will see if it lasts long. Condition was great, appeared new.
