The first think that strikes you when you pick up a Contax RX is that it is a heavy beast. And that should be good reason to put it down and find yourself a lighter, gentler camera. I own some other Contax cameras. Notably the Aria. It does mostly everything an RX does in a very similar package that has been considerably shrunk both in size and weight. So the Aria is better, right? Well, no. It isn't. The Aria is somehow disappointing. It just seems to underwhelm. I do not love the Aria. I do not stay awake at night thinking up photography projects to take it on. In fact I'm probable going to sell it. In complete contrast, the RX is a camera to love and cherish. I do not feel the weight of it because of the joy in its use. The build is top-of-their-game Contax. The titanium curtain shutter has a very satisfying 'ker-shik' noise, like a slightly loud whisper. I was surprised to find a very effective focus indicator built into the display. Together with the beautifully designed Carl Zeiss manual lenses it is incredibly easy to get your subject crisply into focus. And while I'm on the subject of lenses, C/Y Carl Zeiss lenses are rather well priced (although they won't stay like that if I keep bleating on about it), apart from the desirable 35mm f/1.4, that is. Better still, they adapt easily to my mirrorless camera, so I get a double bang for my buck. The camera also has some other nice features. In particular, I like the aperture bracketing control that can be set to +/- half a stop or a full stop at the push of a switch. The auto-exposure lock seems a little clumsy at first, but as you get used to it, it comes to make a lot of sense. The exposure compensation dial is nice and easy to use, as are all the controls and the mode lock ensures that you don't accidentally waste precious film in the wrong mode setting. The viewfinder gives an excellent field of view and has a clear digital read-out of the various settings, including depth of field indicator, although the jury is out on how effective this is. A fly in the ointment is the non-reusable 2CR5 battery that is required, although I had no trouble obtaining these on the internet. So do I recommend buying one of these? Yes. Without reservation. When I shoot A mode, some of the pictures have half dark at high speed (1/1000s). This happens to 5-7 frames out of 24 shots. Now I can not use this camera.

Always wanted to purchase that special camera and thanks to the digital age, I saw and took the opportunity to purchase it! The Contax Rx is in my opinion the best camera Contax ever build. It is a fully manual camera but with a twist, It has a focus indicator! Contax camera's use Zeiss lenses and with the fact that Zeiss did not want to produce AF lenses, the engineer we're stuck. They first tried solving their dilemma with the Ax. The Ax camera focusing was made by moving the film plate! Pretty genius thing to do but in practice, it was slow to react. Then came the Rx with the focus indicator, then the RxII but without the focus indicator (most likely due to the short supply of the parts) Contax then closed their door. Now the RX body is kinda build like a tank, it inspire confidence when holding unlike some others made of composite. It has a motor drive incorporated and even some custom setting for you to adjust to your like. X sync is set at /125. Viewfinder is crisp and clear. I strongly recommend this model.Read full review
I recently received this camera and it is in excellent condition, some brassing on the on the battery cover but the rest of the camera is nearly faultless. All controls work as they should as well as the electronics. I've been wanting to get back into film photography for quite awhile and I had to do a lot of research on 35 mm film cameras and to get this particular one at such a reasonable price makes me absolutely thrilled with this purchase.

Solid camera. Controls fall to hand easily and quickly. Numerous "modes" enhancing photographic capability. With its Digital Focus Indicator, it is light years better than traditional manual focus cameras and allows more control than auto focus cameras. Camera excepts Zeiss lenses as well as Yashica ML's which are very good glass and 1/4 the cost of Zeiss. For anyone wishing to shoot 35mm in this day and age of digital, nothing beats the RX, not Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, etc, etc. While I have two digital SLRs, I still have my two RX's. But then what do I know. I still have land line telephones . . . . . .
