Johnny Cash
I first saw Johnny cash when he visited our post in Korea in 1962. He became a favorite of mine ever since, and I have been fortunate to acquire all of his collections. This CD was a good one. His voice has mellowed, but his professionalism, sincerity and talent will always endure.

Johnny Cash On The Last Of A Hundred Highways
I bought this latest Rick Rubin-ized Johnny Cash offering because I am a diehard fan. From his earliest work with Sun, through every decade, even his sometimes forgotten 80's output, I own it. For some, there is a decision. To buy another record from a man who no longer posessees the voice that made Country music, or to pass on what some describe as squeezing every last drop out of a legendary sponge. With a high recommmendation, I say buy it. It is true that Cash lost his voice, it happened a few records earlier, but in its frailty, it somehow still conveys great power instead the sounds of a man grabbing an extra breath as he struggles on in the end of his life. It doesn't matter if he sings about Life or Death, you believe what he is singing. And just when you think the ... And just when you think the pipes have nothing left, Cash somehow reaches back for a little extra, like a fireballing pitcher in the bottom of the ninth, summoning that little bit more that gets the job done. So for anyone concerned that Rubin is squeezing the sponge, I'll be glad to debate you. Rubin obviously took great care of Cash musically in the end, and also provide him a great friend as well. The songs are terrific for the most part, more smart choices of cover songs that he makes his own and "Like The 309" is as good as any The Man In Black has written. This CD is a must own, and will hold over Cash fans until Rubin polishes up American 6, or perhaps another set like "Unearthed".

You know, when I first heard this cd, I thought "Dear God! He sounds so old and frail." But then something else came through...how beautiful his thoughts were, how much he loved his life and his wife and his gift to communicate with us. He still comes through as so genuine and such a fine communicator. His range goes from the most fragile to the roughest...and it is all great. I've since shared the cd with two others. Iconic Johnny Cash still lives on!
In the Coen brothers recent remake of "True Grit", there's a selection on the soundtrack -"God's gonna cut you down", perfect for the dark film. The moment you hear it, you know that voice! It prompted me to search out this CD. It is part of the American series of CD's produced by Rick Rubin, beautifully recorded, giving us Johnny Cash in his later years. The voice is worn and haggard in spots, but that is the nature of life. Cash puts his stamp on the selections, with some powerful performances. Well Worth it
This is one of the best cds I have ever bought.The songs were deep.It took you a little on the down side at times listening to the legend sing about catching his breath and nearing death. I consider it a masterpiece well worth every cent and many times more.My daughters favorite song is God's Gonna Cut You Down.It has a good beat and it was great to see her enjoying Johnny Cash's music as well as I did as a child.It is hard for me to choose a favorite song on this one, they were all good.This is one of the best cds I have ever bought.The songs were deep.It took you a little on the down side at times listening to the legend sing about catching his breath and nearing death.
