I collect them because I love the design!
The "Mercury Dime" is actually not of the god Mercury, rather it is a portrayal of the Statue of Liberty. The "Mercury Dime" is also more correctly called the "Winged Liberty." The coin was designed by Adolf Alexander Weinman, the same person who designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar that went from 1916 to 1947, the Winged Liberty Dime series went from 1916 to 1947. In my opinion, the Walking Liberty and Winged Liberty represent two of the best designs on a coin ever made in the U.S., with the exception of the much more pricey St. Gauden's Gold Walking Liberty. These coins can be bought at almost the meltdown value of silver. They are a good idea to keep if we actually have an economic crisis, since they are such a small denomination that people can afford them if silver escalates. ... Beautiful coins! Start a small collection today. One can even focus on toned Winged Liberties, they are very pretty!
